Ronan Keating’s hell after wife Storm became temporarily paralysed
Ronan Keating’s wife Storm was rushed into emergency surgery following a prolapsed disc which turned into cauda equina syndrome.
The serious condition is a rare type of spinal stenosis where all nerves in the lower back suddenly become compressed.
Frighteningly, Storm lost the use of both her legs, bowel and bladder and was unable to pick up her baby girl, who was just 14 months at the time.
Speaking on Loose Women in 2021, Storm, 41, said she woke up one morning and was “completely numb” and in a lot of pain.
The mum-of-two said: “It was all gone. My legs, my bowel, my bladder, the lot.”
The terrifying experience occurred in March 2021 during the Covid lockdown, meaning the Boyzone frontman could not be by his wife’s side when she was in hospital.
Describing his fear at the time, the 46-year-old said he “couldn’t handle” the ordeal and the worry that Storm may never be able to walk again.
Appearing on The Late Late Show with John Tubridy, the Irish singer said: “I was a mess, I couldn’t handle it. I couldn’t go into the hospital because of Covid.
“We found out she had to go into surgery and we were told of what could happen, like she might not be able to walk again.
“I couldn’t do anything, I couldn’t even go in and hold her hand. I had tears streaming down my face in my car outside waiting for the doctor to text me.”
Thankfully, Storm’s surgery was a success and she was “miraculously” able to walk again.
But her struggle was far from over and she had to have “rigorous” therapy for a year post-surgery.
In an interview with the Mirror during her rehabilitation, the TV producer said: “I’m not 100 percent perfect, but I’m very guilty of never making time for myself. I don’t have a good balance.
“But now I believe you can’t ignore your body. You’ve got to make time and look after yourself.”
She added that she doesn’t know how she would have coped if she didn’t have the support of Ronan and her stepchildren, Jack and Missy, who Ronan shares with his ex-wife Yvonne Connolly.
She concluded: “I don’t know how we would have got through this speed bump if it wasn’t for having the support of Ronan, Jack and Missy. My view on life has definitely changed a lot since I had that scare.”
It comes as Ronan will return to TV screens tonight as a coach on ITV’s The Voice Kids.
He can be seen with his fellow judges Danny Jones, Pixie Lott and Will.I.Am at 7.30pm.
