Mason Mount’s decision to join Manchester United from Chelsea was down to more than the Blues’ failure in contract negotiations with the midfielder.

The England ace signed a five-year deal at Old Trafford on Tuesday and was officially unveiled 24 hours later.

Chelsea reluctantly agreed to sell the midfielder for a fee of £55m, having rejected three previous bids from United.

The Blues gave in after Mount clarified he would not sign a new deal at the club and would walk away for free in 2024 if they opted not to cash in.

It was a remarkable turnaround for a player that had verbally agreed to stay at the club less than 12 months earlier.

Mount was keen to remain at Stamford Bridge but Chelsea reneged on a £200,000-a-week contract offer to the midfielder.

Instead, Mount was offered a lower base rate and the club even tried to get him to sign a one-year deal with a £70m release clause in order to kick the can down the road.

But the Athletic say Mount’s decision to leave was down to more than his anger at how contract talks played out.

Mount simply feels United are in a better position to win trophies than Chelsea, and feels the Red Devils’ Champions League qualification is proof of that.

Chelsea finished 12th last season and face a huge job to return to the top four.

Just three players remain from the starting XI that beat Manchester City in the Champions League final in 2021 and Mount felt the club had gone backwards since that point.
