90 more Indian Netflix originals in the pipeline: Reed Hastings

Netflix has 90 more original Indian productions in the pipeline apart from a 70 already running, founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings has said.

“We have launched 70 Indian Netflix originals already. Some have won international Emmy. White Tiger got a lot of positive accolades”, Hastings told TOI in an interview.

When asked if the OTT giant is interested in acquiring any production houses in the country, Reed said, “Titles yes, but production companies like that we are not competing with them. So if we start buying one or two — all the others are worried. So we think all the commissions that we are doing are with local production companies, which builds their capacity.”

Monika Shergill, vice president for content planning, who is expanding regional content from the south, said consumers come to the platform for both quality and diversity.

“For us what actually works is diversity, because your Netflix is different from my Netflix. Which is why when we say we have done 70 titles in India — this is across doc series, this is across content like Indian matchmaking, content like the Emmy award-winning Delhi Crime, Jamtara which is on phishing, the crime dramas, ” she said.

Shergill said viewership in India has grown across genres, from television dramas to documentaries and kid’s content and K-dramas and crime.

On content regulation, Hastings said that Netflix is very particular about giving controls to each family for what their children should and shouldn’t be able to watch. The company too self regulates at its end, he said which is why they don’t feature things like pornography.
