25-year-old earns more than £5,000 from her hobby – here’s how
Ms Jump was working at a dental office just before the pandemic when she found a gap in the cosmetic market. Researching, learning and practicing as much as she could, Ms Jump founded Columbus Cosmetic Ink and earns an extra £5,133 every month.
Ms Jump started her first full-time job days before the pandemic hit in March 2020, working as a marketing coordinator at a dental office with a salary of $34,500 (£25,000).
Soon, she began to notice the sheer amount of bookings for cosmetic services, such as teeth whitening and veneers.
This trend continued during the pandemic, which made her question: why were people spending so much on cosmetic procedures that were going to be hidden behind a mask?
While the mandatory mask stipulations were in place, many people realised just how impactful the upper part of their faces are when it comes to first impressions and conveying expression.
This sparked a greater rise in the trends she already noticed and Ms Jump decided to grasp the opportunity with both hands, saying she found herself fixated on reading people’s emotions through their eyes and brows.
She began researching microblading, which is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure where eyebrows are enhanced with tiny tattoos in the shape of individual hairs.
Still maintaining her full-time job, Ms Jump dedicated every moment of spare time she had to learning and practicing microblading, with the intention of turning it into a hobby and nothing more.
Eventually, Ms Jump found herself with around five clients every week, earning $7,200 (£5,280) per month.
After three months of juggling both jobs, she decided to turn her side hustle into a full-time business, officially branding it as Columbus Cosmetic Ink.

Now, with her full attention on her side hustle, Ms Jump started bringing in $8,750 (£6,417) including tips.
Pursing her hobby now meant Ms Jump was able to earn triple her salary at the dental office.
She also added that alongside the financial freedom of running her own lucrative business, she is now the happiest she’s ever been.
Ms Jump shared her top four tips for people looking to start their own side hustles.
Create a business plan
Before she created and registered her business, Ms Jump made a business plan, and noted that one doesn’t need a business degree in order to do it properly.
This is what helped her stay on top of crucial aspects of the business such as financial projections, marketing strategies and logging customer demand as well as ensuring she kept up with her competitors and trends.
She admitted that going full-time with a side hustle was a risk but having this business plan gave her the confidence and preparation she needed to pull it off.
Consider working for free
While it may sound contradictory, those looking to earn an income from a side hustle should consider temporarily working for free when they first start out, Ms Jump suggested.
Doing this helped her to earn her customers’ trust while building a portfolio to attract new clientele.
Master the craft
Before, during and after establishing her business, Ms Jump has ensured that she keeps up to date with the latest regulations, requirements and new techniques in her industry.
Providing her with much needed experience and practice, Ms Jump was able to master her craft and continues her pursuit of knowledge every working day.
Prepare to make sacrifices
Most notably, before she went full-time with her side hustle Ms Jump was essentially working two jobs, meaning a lot of her free-time had to be sacrificed to make it a success.
She added that she was working roughly 60 to 70 hours every week and had to cut out on leisure expenses in order to save money for her business expenses.
