2023 Annual Maths Feast – An exciting challenge by Raunak Gupta Sutton Grammar School
There were several rounds during the event requiring different skills and strategies for success. The first round was a short round but very interesting consisting of different algebraic and geometrical questions. The round allowed us to use multiple aspects of our learning and then put them into action by using various different methods to solve the questions. The second round was based on true or false statements. Different mathematical scenarios were presented to us in which we had to apply our problem-solving and teamwork skills in order to solve the questions as a team and decide on a final answer together. After this, the third round consisted of replicating Archimedes’ method for finding a value for pi. It was exciting for all of us to see how a constant which we use almost every day in math, originates from such basic geometry. This round allowed us to apply our data analysis skills and then replicate the analysis in order to find a value of pi. The final round was the most enjoyable as it comprised of a competitive fast-paced relay. The last round involved the team to split into two pairs. The round consisted of one pair (pair A) answering a question and then passing the correct answer to the other pair (pair B) so that they could solve the question (using the answer from pair A) and then pass the right answer to pair B.
Overall, it was a great learning and fun experience to solve several stages of challenging problems of the Maths Feast! Sutton Grammar School were the winners of round three.
