Zuck ramps up plan to get EVERYONE in the metaverse WITHOUT needing a VR headset
TECH billionaire Mark Zuckerberg is stepping up his metaverse mission so you won’t even need a VR headset to enter the virtual world.
The internet entrepreneur, 38, recently bought a major game development platform called Crayta, so that people can get onto the metaverse via Facebook.
Much of Zuckerberg’s metaverse plan has been focused on transporting users to an immersive virtual world via VR headsets.
But the Facebook owner admits wearables won’t be possible or desired for some.
“A lot of times today, people think about the metaverse as 3D experiences you can have in virtual and augmented reality,” he said.
“But I think what Crayta shows is that you can both build and enjoy these kind of experiences really easily on all kinds of 2D environments including just within the Facebook App on phones and on computers.”
The Facebook founder is spearheading the move to the metaverse, so much so he renamed his company as Meta last year.
His bonkers vision is for us to all eventually work, play and socialise in the evolving virtual world.
Gaming has been the foundation for much of the idea, having already allowed people to explore online spaces as avatars and led the way on VR for sometime.
Meta – which owns Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp – has also announced that it is expanding their catalogue of cloud games on Facebook Gaming to western Europe, Crayta being one of them.
The move will prepare Zuckerberg’s empire for the massive infrastructure needed to pull the metaverse off.
Crayta’s UK-based studio Unit 2 Games was snapped up by the tech giant a year ago.
The virtual building platform was already available on Google Stadia and the Epic Games Store.
“Excited to launch our Crayta social world and game-building environment on Facebook Gaming,” Zuckerberg said.
“With our cloud-streaming tech, it’s really fast to build on both mobile and desktop even if you don’t have a powerful system.
“I recently jumped into Crayta with some talented creators to talk about the future of gaming while building Meta’s iconic Hacker Square.”
