You’ve been using your wing mirrors wrong… the right way makes parking a breeze
A MOTORING expert has revealed how you’ve been using your wing mirrors all wrong – the right way makes parking a breeze.
People are divided after the expert shared five ways you should use your wing mirrors to improve your parking.
The expert’s first tip is to make sure your wing mirrors are positioned correctly, with the largest possible field of the vision.
She claims that you can also use your wing mirrors to judge your distance from the curb when parking, and to steer smoothly in and out of parking spaces.
Her final recommended use for your wing mirrors is to judge how far other cars are behind you when out on the road.
Posting on TikTok, she said: “Many people think that wing mirrors are only used to see cars coming from behind.
“In fact, it has more functions. Knowing the five secrets of the wing mirror can save lives at critical moments.
“First, adjust your wing mirrors so that your door handles are just about visible at the edge of each mirror. This creates the best field of vision.
“Second, when parking, check your wing mirror. When the lower edge of the wing mirror coincides with the upper edge of the curb, step on the brake.
“At this time, the distance is exactly 10 centimetres.
“Third, when reversing into a parking space, turn the steering wheel fully when you can just about see the corner of the parking space.
“The car will reverse smoothly into the parking space.
“Fourth, when leaving the parking space, you can turn out smoothly in either direction when the wing mirrors are aligned with the front of the car next to you.
“Fifth, divide the rearview mirror into halves (with the dividing line running from top to bottom). When the vehicle behind appears in the half nearer the window, it is safer to change lanes or make a U-turn.”
Not everyone was convinced by the TikTok driving advice.
Che said: “I just use instinct and the grace of God.”
JP said: “I tried using your tip to measure my distance from the curb. I’m now inside the Post Office.”
Melissa said: “Why weren’t we taught this by our driving instructors?”
You should always check the Highway Code and your car’s driving manual before following any advice from social media.
It comes after a shocking number of motorists admitted they don’t follow a huge rule change which came in last year – and could be slapped with a £1,000 fine.
A new list of banned number plates has also been revealed, following the launch of the “23” plate for vehicles.
