Your next TV could be completely FREE – but there’s a catch that may put you off

A TV company has come up with a bonkers idea to give away tellies for free.

But there’s a huge catch that could put many people off.

The strange concept comes with a second screen – and it’s filled with adverts.

According to reporter Janko Roettgers the “audacious plan” has been devised by Ilya Pozin, co-founder of free ad-based platform Pluto TV.

It’ll apparently come in the form of a screen about phone height that goes across the entire width of the main TV display.

On it, there will be adverts as well as widgets with information like weather.

The device is expected to use tech to identify what’s being watched so that relevant adverts can appear.

And it won’t be a smart TV either – instead it’ll bundle in existing streaming dongles.

Ad supported tech has become popular lately as everyone looks to cut costs due to the cost of living crisis.

Netflix introduced a cheaper ad-filled plan last year.

And Amazon is bolstering its completely free ad-supported platform Freevee with new content like Neighbours.

But a piece of kit that comes with a dedicated display for ads is one step further.

The service will simply be called Telly, it’s claimed.

A site currently shows the outline of a television, with the tagline: “The biggest thing to happen to TV since color.”

It also suggests a launch could be sooner than you think, saying it’s “coming 2023”.
