X-Men: Two Classic Marvel Characters Set Their Sights on the Mutant Nation

In X-Men, a major Marvel villain and an old ally of many New York-based heroes are the newest Marvel figures to target Marvel’s new mutant team.

The X-Men have been making increasingly bold moves in the Marvel Universe — from building a surprising new base in the heart of Manhattan to finding the means to terraform Mars with just a handful of Omega-Level Mutants. Their willingness to use their powers in such ways has also begun to catch the attention of the greater Marvel Universe.

Enemies like Doctor Doom and even allies like the Avengers have been shown growing increasingly cautious about the actions taken by the mutants of Krakoa. Now, there are two specific Marvel characters who’ve been positioned against the X-Men — each with their own way of bringing chaos to the future the mutants are hoping to build for themselves.

Upon the public unveiling of the Treehouse and the connected Seneca Gardens, Cyclops makes sure to visit the public. One of the people who came to look at the base is Ben Urich — the veteran Daily Bugle reporter. A frequent ally of the hero community, Urich admits — both to Cyclops and in his editorial for the Daily Bugle about the X-Men — that he’s genuinely impressed by the Treehouse and what it signifies. But he also takes the chance to speak with Cyclops to bring up Jumbo Carnation. The world-famous mutant fashion designer was one of the countless mutants who’ve been resurrected on Krakoa following their untimely death. Resurrection remains a secret to most of the world — and for the most part, humanity has made do with just accepting the mutants can walk off any injury thrown at them.

However, Urich had extensively covered the death of Jumbo at the time, even taking special care to paint the mutant figure in a positive light. He’d even examined Jumbo’s body, and never received official word on Jumbo’s cause of death. This seems to still linger with Urich, who addresses the concern to Cyclops and asks if Jumbo had been truly dead — and requests more details about how he’s back up and moving.

Without realizing it, Urich is pulling at one of the biggest secrets about the current X-Men and their allies. He could end up playing a role in exposing the great Krakoa secret to the rest of the world. Another lingering threat to the growth of Krakoa and the mutant-aligned groups seems to be the High Evolutionary.

The powerful scientist is among the crowd present at Gameworld, now run by the monstrous Cordyceps Jones. Growing exhausted with humanity, Jones promises his clientele reward if someone there can destroy humanity — while sparing the Earth, which could be then recolonized and converted into something more to their liking.

One particular close-up of the High Evolutionary indicates he might have some ideas on how to accomplish that goal, which puts him in the direct crosshairs of the X-Men. Considering they’ve announced themselves as protectors of Earth as a whole once more (and the newly assembled roster’s first fight saw them defeating an attack by an alien working for Jones), it’ll likely fall to the X-Men to deal with the next similar threat.

Even after gaining a whole host of new enemies since the formation of Krakoa, the changing circumstances of the X-Men and their power base is continuing to set the heroes up against new threats at every turn. But now, they don’t just face physical dangers but existential ones that could expose the truth about their true potential.
