X-Men: Trial of Magneto Reveals a Major Problem With a Resurrected Hero

Scarlet Witch is seemingly reborn in X-Men: Trial of Magneto #3, but all signs indicate that she has major holes in her memory.

Scarlet Witch is back from her demise at the onset of X-Men: The Trial of Magneto, but she’s certainly not the same Wanda Maximoff who died in Issue #1.

X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #3 continues to raise new questions regarding the death and rebirth of Wanda, who was seemingly reborn at the end of Issue #2 and embraced her former husband Vision. A preview for the issue shows her react in confusion as Vision tells her that he’s barely been able to recover from grieving over his second wife, the synthezoid robot Virginia, who died in 2016’s Vision #12. As her Avengers and X-Men comrades circle around her and speculate on whether or not she is the real Scarlet Witch, a puzzled Wanda can only admit that she has large gaps in her memory that she can’t begin to explain.

Issue #1 of X-Men: The Trial of Magneto saw Krakoa’s mutants banding together to investigate the crime scene of Wanda’s apparent murder on the night of the Hellfire Gala. Eventually they determined that someone close to Wanda had killed her by magnetic strangulation before she had a chance to react with her magic. All signs pointed towards Magneto, the man Scarlet Witch believed for years to be her father. Magneto’s actual role in Wanda’s death—if he played any at all —has yet to be revealed, however, and the elder mutant has denied any wrongdoing and even vehemently argued for Wanda’s resurrection via Cerebro in Issue #1.

Krakoa possesses mutant resurrection technology, essentially allowing any mutant to be restored from death into a cloned body. In Issue #1, the Quiet Council of Krakoa voted 6-3 against reviving Wanda, with several members citing the fact that the Scarlet Witch—despite undergoing multiple retcons regarding the source of her powers over the years—is not actually a mutant. However, Professor X pointed out Cerebro created “very, very old backups” of Wanda and her brother Quicksilver when the two were still believed to be part of mutantkind, making the resurrection of Scarlet Witch theoretically possible. While true answers have yet to be revealed, it is possible that this newly resurrected Scarlet Witch in Issue #3 may be one of those old backup, thus explaining the holes in her memory.

X-Men: The Trail of Magneto #3 is written by Leah Williams and illustrated by Lucas Werneck. The book features a cover by Valerio Schiti and variant covers by Bryan Hitch, Oscar Vega, Peach Momoko and Joe Jusko. It goes on sale Oct. 20.
