X-Men: Marvel Is Finally Making Mister Sinister a Real Villain Again

Mister Sinister’s own conspiracy has just caught up with him in Hellions, and it might just be the thing that sees him return to his villainous ways.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Hellions #13 by Zeb Wells, Roge Antonio, Rain Beredo, Tom Muller, and VC’s Ariana Maher, on sale now.

Marvel’s mutants have gone through a lot of changes over the past few years, and Mister Sinister has evolved right alongside them. As a member of the Quiet Council that leads Krakoa, Sinister has toed the line between being corrupt and shaping mutantkind’s future to his whims, where he would have previously been unmistakably evil. Unfortunately, old habits die hard, and Sinister’s most recent machinations have just caught up with him in the worst possible way.

And in Hellions #13, Mister Sinister just spelled doom for himself and the Hellions, and he’s also been given a front row seat to his own despicable descent.

When Sinister led the Hellions to Amenth on a mission they believed would help Krakoa win the X of Swords crossover, it all turned out to be a ruse so that Sinister could gain access to DNA from the mutants of Amenth. Unfortunately, his team of Hellions did not survive the process. While the Locus Vile of Amenth tore through the Hellions on their soil, Sinister killed the remainder of his team to ensure that his secrets would remain his alone. However, it looks like his grand plot has come back to bite him, as Sinister’s clone that he employed in his conspiracy has returned to face his lesser self.

The return of Sinister’s clone from Amenth is a startling development on its own, but not necessarily a shocking heel turn for the character. While Mister Sinister has always been a conniving, back-stabbing, self-aggrandizing figure in the Marvel Universe, the recent achievements for mutantkind have seen him act far more benevolently all around. There is no doubt that he is one of the least likeable members of the Quiet Council, and that his methods are highly questionable at nearly every turn, but he has gone from being an outright villain to a far more complex individual. Over the past years, Sinister has continued to act characteristically selfishly, but always with the interests of Krakoa at least in the back of his mind.

Now, Sinister’s place on Krakoa may very well be usurped by his more devilish counterpart, and that could spell doom for the mutant nation’s general populace. Not only would the worst version of Sinister have access to all of his other’s resources, but he would without question weaponize his seat on the Quiet Council, which could very easily see him rise to prominence as a villain once more.

There is always the chance that the Hellions and the original Sinister will find a way out of the mess that the latter has created for them, although it doesn’t look like that will be happening anytime soon. The Hellions have already been easily defeated before by the Locus Vile, and it doesn’t look like things are going to be much different the second time around. If the Sinister clone does indeed take the place of his progenitor, the status quo of the Marvel Universe may very well be in for just as big of a shakeup.
