X-Men: Magneto’s Omega-Level Mutant Powers Just Tore Through the Avengers
The Avengers might be Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, but the X-Men’s Trial of Magneto proves they can’t stand up to Omega-Level mutant powers.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #2, now on sale from Marvel Comics.
Omega-Level Mutants are among the most powerful beings in the Marvel Universe. But even among the Omega-Level Mutants, there are only a handful capable of bringing down entire armies on their own. And now, one of them is showcasing to plenty of heroes why they’re such a threat.
The X-Men have recently reaffirmed just how dangerous Magneto can really be, and in X-Men: The Trial of Magneto #2 by Leah Williams, Lucas Werneck, Edgar Delgado and VC’s Clayton Cowles, the Avengers get a quick but brutal reminder too.
Magneto is an Omega-Level Mutant, meaning he has a great deal of nearly limitless power and potential. His control over all things metallic in nature gives him flexibility with his abilities that, in his occasionally ruthless hands, makes him possibly one fo the most dangerous mutants alive. When he was a major villain in the past, he could put the entire planet at risk just on his own. And even now in the age of Krakoa, he’s more than capable of holding his own against scores of enemies. Wanted for his possible connection to Scarlet Witch’s death, even the assembled might of the X-Men, X-Factor and X-Force weren’t able to overwhelm him, despite their far superior numbers.
He even proves himself in a brief fight against Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in The Trial of Magneto #2. Arriving on the island nominally to recover the body of Scarlet Witch, a contingent of Avengers — Captian America, Iron Man, Wasp, Vision and an already present Quicksilver — are initially at peace with the X-Men. But when Magneto is given a psychic nudge by Hope Summers, he dons his classic villainous purple and red costume and brings the fight to the Avengers. Demanding they leave the island and not go near Wanda’s body, Magneto’s appearance prompts the Avengers to ultimately ignore Cyclops’ request and spring into action. But despite the Avengers landing a handful of hits, Magneto quickly strips Captain America of his shield, knocks out Iron Man, and casually pins Vision down to the ground.
The Avengers are, unlike the mutants, largely human in nature and dependent on their weapons and equipment in a way that others aren’t. Even other notable Avengers — like Black Widow, Hawkeye and Thor — all use metal weapons too. Perhaps only Black Panther is prepared to fight with Magneto, but even he can’t fully counter him. And Magneto can easily utilize that and throw the heroes around with little effort. It’s a good reminder of how dangerous Magneto really is when he’s going up against someone who lacks the overwhelming power of other Omega-Level Mutants. It also speaks to the efficacy of the X-Men as a unit, with their own powers and training working together in conflict often being the key to defeating someone as powerful as Magneto.
It’s also a worrisome reminder for everyone on and off Krakoa that Magneto was once considered one of Marvel’s most deadly villains. With the amount of power at his disposal, entire teams mean nothing. While he’s nominally been an ally to the heroes at various points — and is even considered one of the architects of the nation of Krakoa. But he’s always just been one temper tantrum away from turning once more against humanity — and if he did so, he’d become a global-level threat within moments. It likely doesn’t give the Avengers any more faith in Krakoa — which has already been on shaky ground in recent months.
