X-Men: Emma Frost May Pay the Ultimate Price for Her Secret Deal

The X-Men leader Emma Frost’s secret deal with a major Marvel villain recently came to light, and it might have put a massive target on her back.

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for the Kingpin story in Free Comic Book Day: Spider-Man & Venom, available now from Marvel.

Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin, has always been one of Marvel’s most dangerous villains, but his wraith has been held at bay recently by his current role as a public servant in the pages of Daredevil. But things might be taking a deadly turn for numerous heroes.

Kingpin is seemingly preparing to turn his wraith against the Marvel Universe in a Free Comic Book Day story by Chip Zdarsky, Greg Smallwood, and VC’s Clayton Cowles, and that includes Emma Frost, who was recently revealed to have once made a dark deal with him.

The Kingpin has been recently trying to affirm his power via legitimate means, even running for public office in the aftermath of Secret Empire. He was successful in this bid and was elected Mayor of New York. However, things haven’t been as easy for Kingpin as he would like. His time in public office has failed to earn him serious wins against the hero community outside of the resurrection of his son, the Rose. His lingering inner darkness has also slowly revealed itself across the events of Daredevil, with his most recent scheme to transform Bullseye into the perfect tool resulting in the serial killer and a batch of similarly skilled clones making their move against New York City in gruesome fashion.

Any of these conflicts could finally push Fisk to the edge — which might be coming closer than anyone expects if the FCBD 2021: Spider-Man & Venom special is any indication. The short comic hints that Fisk is finally at a breaking point and has no more fear of how the world observes him, and it sets him up to go off the deep end. In his mind, he imagines telling Daredevil what he’s done while surrounded by the bodies of numerous major superheroes. Many of them are street-level heroes of New York City or have faced off with Fisk before. But notably, one of the heroes featured in the shot is Emma Frost. As a resident of the X-Men’s corner of the Marvel Universe, the mutant leader has traditionally had little on-page interaction with Fisk.

However, it’s been recently revealed the pair formerly had a partnership. Fisk employed a young Emma Frost — during her days when she was still a villainous figure and prominent member of the Hellfire Club — as his own personal telepath. Her abilities were of great use to Kingpin, and it’s clear that even Emma is unhappy with the dark things she was forced to do under his employ. But in doing so, she gained an ally in Fisk, even utilizing his resources to help her fellow Hellfire Club member Lourdes Chantel escape the grasp of her abusive lover, Sebastian Shaw. Emma hinted at  Shaw that she eventually found a way to escape Kingpin’s employ, but that it took serious hard work and dark manipulations to achieve.

That’s what makes Emma’s body — seen among the other heroes Kingpin believes will be in his way and soon at his feet — all the more enigmatic. The other heroes Fisk imagines — Iron Man, Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, Ms. Marvel, both Spider-Men, Iron Fist, and Elektra — have complicated his control of New York in some capacity. However, Emma Frost, who can be spotted amongst them, has been primarily focused on the future of Krakoa.

It seems that instead, her recent admission of Chantel’s survival might draw up some old tensions between her and Shaw and that Fisk may soon be involved as well. This is worrying on lots of levels, ranging from her demise at the hands of Fisk potentially exposing mutant resurrection to the world to the general concern that a member of the Quiet Council might soon be targeted by one of Marvel’s greatest and most dangerous criminals. Even though there’s an ocean between the X-Men’s Krakoa and Wilson Fisk, that may not be enough o save the White Queen from the Kingpin’s wrath.
