The recent resurrection of a mutant leader may hold the key to saving Krakoa, even when every future says that mutantkind is fated to lose.

Ever since 2019’s groundbreaking Powers of X #6, by Jonathan Hickman, R.B. Silva and Pepe Larraz, it’s been well-known that mutantkind is always fated to lose. With this dour inevitability in mind, the fate of Krakoa, the mutant island-nation, doesn’t look very promising. The recent resurrection of Cable, however, might just hold the key to saving mutantkind.
The first hints of it are in the pages of Cable #11 where “Kid Cable” has his older self resurrected. When the older Cable returns, he shows some familiarity with Krakoa. Nathan Summers says that it’s been a while since he’s been there. This is a good sign that Cable remembers his younger years, spending time on Krakoa with his family. Moreover, Cable might remember the overarching rise and fall of Krakoa from his youth. As a time-traveler, Cable has typically been well aware of future events, so it’s likely that he also knows the inevitable fate of Krakoa. It’s interesting that Cable, who has seen the future, has made his way to Krakoa, considering its ban on precognitive mutants.
Professor X, Magneto and Moira X have all agreed to ban precogs on Krakoa, so the rest of the nation will never learn the dark truth: in all of her past lives, Moira X has only ever seen mutantkind lose. Cable, however, might have lived through Krakoa’s rise and fall, giving him plenty of information on everything that’s about to unfold. If Cable did experience Krakoa’s future, he could have the knowledge needed to prevent its destruction as well. Unlike precognitive mutants, Cable has lived through the future, rather than simply envisioning it. From this experience, Cable has largely devoted his life to creating a better future for mutantkind.
It’s possible that Cable knows exactly what threats Krakoa will face, along with the necessary details to stop them. As Cable potentially becomes part of Krakoan society, he could work with governing bodies such as the Quiet Council to avert any future catastrophes. As things progress, Cable could alert the Krakoans to certain people, events and decisions which could result in disaster.
There is still one issue left in Cable’s current series. Perhaps Kid Cable will go back to his own time, meaning he won’t experience the possible fall of Krakoa. As the series unfolds, it’s unclear how much Cable will know about Krakoa’s future. Even if he doesn’t remember exactly what went wrong, however, Cable is still a great mutant leader. Nathan’s proactive style and militaristic leadership skills could be of great use.
Fighting for the future is Cable’s most distinct purpose, especially as a time-traveler. This is a big reason why Cable formed the original X-Force in the first place. Converting the New Mutants into a paramilitary group, Cable taught them to proactively deal with threats to mutantkind. With this in mind, Cable would have a fairly good place on the current X-Force roster, using his knowledge of the future and skills as a soldier to save Krakoa from any impending disasters. Another great example of Cable looking out for mutantkind’s future came in 2008’s X-Men #207, by Mike Carey and Chris Bachalo. In this issue, Cable took the baby Hope Summers into the future, raising the mutant messiah so she could come back and save the rest of mutantkind.
In 2012’s Avengers vs. X-Men #12, by Brian Michael Bendis, Jason Aaron, Ed Brubaker, Matt Fraction, Jonathan Hickman and Adam Kubert, Hope and the Scarlet Witch did reignite the mutant race, showing how Cable’s efforts to raise and protect Hope paid off. In this way, Cable indirectly saved mutantkind from extinction. This is only one of several instances in which Cable has worked to make a future better than his own. If Cable does know the fate of Krakoa, he’ll probably do what’s best for mutantkind and the timeline in general. No matter what happens, it’s likely that Cable will be there to ensure the survival of mutants across time.
