The X-Cellent, Peter Milligan and Michael Allred’s long-delayed X-Statix spinoff, finally launches from Marvel Comics in February 2022.
This coming February, The X-Cellent reunites the creative team behind X-Statix for their weirdest X-Men title yet.
The X-Cellent comes from writer Peter Milligan, artist Michael Allred and colorist Laura Allred, the creators behind the cult-classic X-Men spinoff title X-Statix. The X-Cellent is an ongoing series that was originally announced over two years ago but was delayed indefinitely, leaving many fans to question when it would come out. Now, the wait is nearly over, and readers can look forward to the return of forgotten favorites like U-Go Girl, Doop, Mister Sensitive, Zeitgeist, Anarchist and Dead Girl in February 2022.

Said Milligan, “I’m thoroughly X-Statix to be working with Mike and Laura Allred again.” The writer also hyped up readers who had been patiently waiting for the series, saying “It’s been truly X-CELLENT to discover that we’ve lost none of our alchemical fizz in conjuring up this new comic, this new title, this new beginning: The X-CELLENT!”
In the same way that The X-Cellent was created in the wake of X-Statix, so too was the original X-Statix forged from the foundation of X-Force. In 2001’s X-Force #116, Milligan and the Allreds began their critically acclaimed work by introducing a new cast of characters to that series, changing the book from a bombastic action-adventure to a quirky trip through the Marvel Universe. However, nearly every member of the team died and the characters decided that they wanted to rebrand themselves as X-Statix. The series ended in 2004 and in the years since, it has become one of the most-celebrated works of its era.
When first launched, Milligan and the Allreds’ series presented the cast as the world’s premier celebrity X-Men team. The characters acted as if they were on a reality show and had little regard for actually being heroes. This was a jarring contrast to the work being done at the time by Grant Morrison and Chuck Austen, changing the expectations for X-Men comics. The creators also showed little regard for maintaining their own status quo and regularly killed the cast in gratuitous ways. Long before the X-Men could rely on the resurrection protocols to keep them coming back from the dead, the danger of X-Statix kept fans on their toes.
As the X-Men prepare to enter the Second Krakoan Age, the landscape of Marvel’s mutants is dramatically different than it was 20 years ago. Michael Allred expressed his excitement to come back to the franchise, saying “The future is looking brighter for 2022 as we get to show the world how we’ve been playing with our X-Statix Marvel mutants and their new adversaries, THE X-CELLENT! LOVE these characters! Everyone come play with us!”
Written by Peter Milligan and illustrated by Michael Allred with colors by Laura Allred, The X-Cellent #1 goes on sale in February 2022 from Marvel Comics.
