WWE Raw results, grades: Edge and Beth Phoenix ruin Maryse’s birthday bash

WWE Hall of Famers Beth Phoenix and Edge ruin The Miz's birthday party for Maryse on Raw in January 2022

The Miz tried to celebrated Maryse’s birthday on WWE Raw this week but Edge and Beth Phoenix made sure it went about as well as you’d expect.

The Hall of Fame couple crashed the party at the end of Monday’s episode, ruining their rival’s night less than a week before they meet in a mixed tag team match at the Royal Rumble.

At the end of the show, the A-Lister had plenty of lavish gifts in the ring, including a portrait of him and his wife as a prince and princess, while he also presented her with a bejeweled box.

Maryse wanted to open the biggest gift next, but Miz insisted he didn’t get that one, leading to some confusion before the former WWE Champion ordered security to open it up.

It turned out the couple were trolling fans, as it ended up being the same brick she hid in her handbag when she attacked Phoenix on last week’s show.

Clearly not amused by the stunt, Beth and her husband stormed the ring, taking out security on the way – but Miz and Maryse escaped before they could be attacked themselves.

The Rated R Superstar and the Glamazon took battered security and wrecked the presents all set up in the ring, hitting one guard with a Hart Attack and another with a 3D in a nice tribute to two legendary tag teams.

They put the icing on the, erm, cake with a powerbomb through the birthday treat to another security guard, sending a message to their rivals before their showdown on Saturday night.

Brock Lesnar and Bobby Lashley have their weigh-in, Doudrop attacks Becky Lynch and RK-Bro beat Alpha Academy in a spelling bee

There was a lot to get through this week, and the show opened with Brock Lesnar – who was wearing a cowboy hat to go with his jeans and flannel shirt style – and Bobby Lashley coming out for their weigh-in.

It was actually pretty uneventful, with WWE wisely keeping the two heavyweights from getting physical before their championship match at the Rumble this weekend.

Of course, there was plenty of trash talk with the Beast and the All Mighty accompanied by Paul Heyman and MVP respectively, while Lesnar took his hat off but kept the rest on as he took to the scales.

With a final parting shot of ‘Lashley who?’, Brock and his advocate left, ending the segment without the brawl most fans will have been expecting.

In the opening match, Bianca Belair looked fantastic as she convincingly beat Queen Zelina in a brief but competitive bout which did everything it needed to as the EST of WWE showed off her strength.

Kevin Owens battled Damian Priest for the United States Title, having insisted he wasn’t cheating when he appeared to feign injury during their bout last week.

In the end, the Archer of Infamy ignored the referee’s warnings and kept attacking KO in the corner, eventually leading to a DQ loss but still retaining the gold in a slightly disappointing ending to an brilliant bout.

Rhea Ripley, Liv Morgan and 24/7 Champion Dana Brooke all staked their claims to win the Royal Rumble this weekend, before teaming up in a winning effort against Nikki A.S.H., Carmella and Tamina – but sadly this was far too short to mean much.

After the bell, Nikki took a cheap shot at her former tag team partner, but ran away before the Nightmare could fire back.

WWE superstars RK-Bro - Riddle and Randy Orton - face Alpha Academy duo Chad Gable and Otis in a spelling bee on Raw

Up next was the spelling bee between RK-Bro and Alpha Academy, with all four men playing their roles to perfection – which bodes well, with this being the first of three weekly challenges (next week’s will be a scooter race).

It led to a singles match between Randy Orton and Chad Gable, who created magic in the ring en route to an RKO win for the Viper.

We also saw more of Alexa Bliss in therapy as she revealed how she met her creepy Lilly doll, taking her back to being six years old when some girls made fun of her.

Lilly took care of them, but we don’t find out any of the sinister details as the segment fades out.

WWE superstar AJ Styles hits the Phenomenal Forearm on Austin Theory during their match on Raw

Austin Theory tried to get boss Vince McMahon to give him a high number in the Royal Rumble, but he told him to focus on his match with AJ Styles.

Theory and the Phenomenal One delivered a spectacular match, with the latter picking up the win which stopped the rising star from getting his customary selfie after the bell.

Becky Lynch and Doudrop had a sitdown interview from separate studios, hyping up their Raw Women’s Title match this weekend.

They both shone here, before the Scottish star stormed off and appeared in Becky’s frame, attacking the champ until referees broke up the brawl.

Rey and Dominik Mysterio teased each other about the Rumble match itself, before beating The Street Profits in a very entertaining, face-paced bout with Montez Ford again shining, at one point hitting a perfect superman pose mid-flight.

After the match, Dominik tried to throw his dad out of the ring but got chucked out himself, with the Profits and the Dirty Dawgs all getting involved in the Rumble preview.

WWE Raw airs Monday nights at 1am on BT Sport 1.
