World’s largest cruise ship five times larger than the Titanic
The world’s largest cruise ship has just been floated out to sea for the first time and it’s been called a “monstrosity”. Royal Caribbean International’s Icon of the Seas is five times larger than the Titanic.
The excitement around its launch has also been compared to that of the Titanic prior to its maiden voyage. First impressions, however, have not been well-received on social media.
One tweeted: “The world’s largest monstrosity of a cruise ship, Icon of the seas 7,600 max capacity, 20 decks. That does NOT look relaxing at all”.
Another wrote: “I love a cruise but I’m getting nervous just looking at all that stuff, looks like it’ll sink it’s so heavy”
“That boat looks like something from a nightmare”, someone else said.
Its construction was recently completed in Finland and its first unveiling was this week. It has taken over 2,000 specialists to build this 20-deck floating “neighborhood”.
It’s due to sail out of Miami in January 2024, where it will be cruising the Caribbean on seven-night trips. The numbers involved are as mind-blowing as their size.
The Icon will have 2,350 crew members, 5,610 guests, 28 different room categories, seven pools, nine whirlpools and six waterslides including the largest floating waterpark. The food and drink options are enormous with over 40 different places to choose from.
The ship is made up of five neighborhoods. They are:
Thrill Island – offering high-octane adventures including a waterpark
Chill Island – a three-deck space consisting of seven pools – including a swim-up bar and adults-only retreat.
Surfside – geared towards young families including a carousel and arcade
The Hideaway – a beach club with uninterrupted ocean views
AquaDome – a water park with a gigantic waterfall
Royal Caribbean International believe they are answering the increase in demand for multi-generational vacations. Michael Bayley, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International said: “The brand has evolved and become more and more focused on multi-generational families. If you see and understand what Icon truly is, we deliver that and we tick every single box as it relates to the ultimate family vacation”.
Families clearly agree. ookings for Icon back in October 2022 proved to be the busiest in the history of the company.
