Workforce management software provider Betterplace enters Malaysia with Troopers acquisition

The acquisition is expected to strengthen BetterPlace’s gig fulfilment and workforce-as-a-service (WaaS) capabilities.

Last December, ET had reported that Betterplace, which had raised $40 million through convertible notes, was looking to expand its presence across Southeast Asia.

The company had targeted increasing its global footprint to six countries by the end of 2023, cofounder Pravin Agarwala had told ET.

Founded in 2015, BetterPlace provides a horizontal software platform to enterprises and small businesses, helping them manage their blue and grey-collar workers. It manages the complete lifecycle of workforce management, right from assessment services of job seekers to digital onboarding, upskilling and compliance.

Further, BetterPlace will be leveraging Troopers’ automated gig matching and rostering capabilities along with its own platform, while enabling enterprises in Malaysia and the South East Asia region to manage the entire lifecycle of their frontline workforce, including hiring, onboarding, verification, attendance, payroll and upskilling. “BetterPlace will help enterprises reliably address issues such as high attrition rates, sky-rocketing management costs, skilled manpower availability issues. At the same time, frontline workers will be able to maximize their overall earning potential through Troopers’ proprietary gig matching algorithms,” said Agarwala, who is also the group chief executive officer (CEO) of BetterPlace.

Troopers is a talent solutions platform that helps enterprises in Malaysia find on-demand, pre-screened, frontline workers on a part time basis, giving them the flexibility to scale up gig workers per the demands of their operations. Since its inception, in 2017, Troopers claims to have placed over 50,000 gig workers.

“The workforce ecosystem in South East Asia has largely been informal, making it difficult for workers to discover supplementary jobs or have the opportunity to increase their earning potential. To add to the problem, workers do not have the necessary skills to match growing enterprise requirements. We look forward to leveraging BetterPlace’s tech capabilities and domain expertise, which would help us scale this proposition further, potentially changing the nature of frontline work in SEA (Southeast Asia) and the globe,” said Joshua Tan, cofounder and CEO, Troopers.

In February, BetterPlace acquired Indonesia’s blue-collar staffing platform MyRobin, marking its advent in that country.
