Woman makes £156K a month – after ignoring advice to quit business course she now teaches

Studying for her MBA, Ms Norton was told to quit as she wasn’t proficient at data handling – but she is now educating people on the courses she was told to give up, making over £100,000 every month. Ms Norton founded her online course company during the height of the pandemic and has achieved these amazing results thanks to social media.

Ms Norton started her company, Miss Excel, in November 2020 after almost five years working in the corporate landscape doing bank securitisation reviews.

“I started the business $60,000 (£43,000) in student debt, living in my parent’s house. Since launching the business, my boyfriend, who also quit his corporate job shortly after I did, and I are now full-time digital nomads living out our dreams of traveling the world. Each month we move to a new city.”

Starting with a few courses on the Thinkific platform, Ms Norton took to TikTok and Instagram to showcase her business, hitting her first six-figure month in April 2021.

“By my 6th (TikTok) video, the CEO of an IT company asked me to create G-Suite training videos for students, parents and teachers, as this is when many schools were pivoting to the digital space. So I formed an LLC, ordered a green screen and a ring light to my childhood bedroom, and Miss Excel was officially in business!”

She explained that the inspiration behind this lucrative business was her deep desire to have an impact, teaching people the necessary skills to be comfortable with Microsoft products.

Being a digital nomad, Ms Norton can work how, when and where she pleases, creating her own office culture as she goes.

With the financial and physical freedoms of running her own business, Ms Norton has made a unique decision in not scraping her student loans just yet.

Ms Norton invested the money she would have used to pay off her loans and is now looking forward to buying her dream home in Sedona, Arizona by the end of next year.

“I have been having the time of my life with it all and the business is truly global,” she commented.

DONT MISS:

“Aside from the geographic and financial freedom, I found myself to be truly happy now that I am living out my purpose.”

As it turns out, this was Ms Nortons main motivation behind the business as she was not happy in her current reality and searched for something to help her get out of it.

The pandemic provided the perfect opportunity for Ms Norton to delve within herself and discover what she wanted this purpose to be.

“I got super clear on my intuition and opportunities started flowing toward me. From corporate clients, to press opportunities, to viral video ideas — everything in alignment with my vision just kept falling into place.”

She also noted that social media was the main driver behind her business, and by going viral on TikTok with her quirky hacks for Excel, she was able to amass a following of over one million across TikTok and Instagram.

“Creating viral content is my specialty,” she commented.

Ms Norton shared some of her biggest tips for creating viral content and for those looking to understand the sometimes complicated world of Microsoft.

Create polarity

Ms Norton achieved her first viral video by combining her passion for dance with excel: “It was a combination that no one had seen before, and yet, was two things that I absolutely adored. The polarity is what generated the initial comments that helped the account get off the ground. Some people loved it and others were completely dumbfounded. Both responses generated thousands of comments, shares and saves that ultimately got the videos trending in the algorithm.”

Support yourself

When she first started Miss Excel, Ms Norton was still working her corporate job, resulting in 100 hour work weeks all within her childhood bedroom. While some questioned her sanity, she replied: “If you knew with 100 percent certainty that if you did XYZ you would get where you always dreamed of going — would you do it? Or would you sit there?”

“In other words, if you know that you will not stop until you reach where you want to go, you will have a 100 percent success rate. You could be one post away from growing a massive following that flows into your dream biz!”

Inner work

Ms Norton suggests that those looking to go into entrepreneurship or build their business through social media should be prepared both mentally and physically.

“Growing a business on social media requires you to put yourself out there. Your nervous system needs to be able to hold the attention and criticism that comes with being on social media. If not, you will continually block your success and growth on the platforms.”

Don’t post in a bad mood

Ms Norton pointed out that content produced in a bad place will not come across well, whether on social media or the physical world, saying: “The community notices the subtle nuances.”

She concluded: “My biggest advice for other entrepreneurs is to really hone in on your purpose. When you are doing things that light you up the business will just flow. I did a 180 degree turn on my life just by figuring out what I actually loved to do and aligning myself with that.”
