When there’s tension among loved ones, seemingly inconsequential things can cause massive blow-outs.

For example, a woman has revealed how something she considered a joke has caused a major family rift, forcing her parents and siblings to take sides.

On the Reddit Am I The Asshole? page, where people seek guidance on contentious situations, the 29-year-old explained how her family call her ‘princess’ due to her ‘opinionated and sensitive’ nature.

Although the poster has no issue with the running joke, her 30-year-old step-sister, Georgia, ‘hates’ the nickname and ‘used to snap whenever anyone said it but over the years just started making the odd passive aggressive comment.’

The woman added: ‘Everyone ignores it, because Georgia has a habit of thinking everything is about her, and if it’s not about her, the reason it’s not about her is because we all hate her, which then is still about her.’

Conflict arose while the family were on a recent trip to the countryside, where Georgia had brought her boyfriend Jason along and they were all having breakfast.

‘Jason offered to make the drinks,’ said the woman. ‘I told him not to do mine because I liked it made a very particular way.’

She continued: ‘He said “Okay princess I will just watch how you do it so I know for next time” and we laughed. It. Was. A. Joke.

‘The next thing we know, Georgia shouts she’s sick of everyone calling me that. She then swore at Jason for being “just like them (us)”.

‘She said since everyone thinks I’m so special what does that make her, and I replied “the ugly step-sister, obviously”.

‘No one said anything, but Georgia burst into tears, pushed her plate onto the floor (broke it) and went upstairs, and Jason ran after her. He’s since come down to apologise for her, she hasn’t come out of her room.’

According to the original poster, her step-brothers were on her side while their parents said she ‘went too far picking at an insecurity’.

‘That might be true, but I’m sick of her making everything about her,’ she added. ‘The joke doesn’t have anything to do with her, and I am (as are my step-brothers) sick of her acting out to force everyone to behave how she wants them to.’

Reddit users largely disagreed with the woman, with one person saying: ‘Being overly picky doesn’t make you special or give you the right to call someone else ugly.’

Another commented: ‘You called her ugly. But your story really paints you as the ugly step-sister – opinionated, sensitive and calling people names.’

Many branded her the asshole and suggested she apologise, with some calling her ‘insufferable’, ‘mean-spirited’ and ‘cruel’.

Others surmised that Georgia’s insecurities may be as a result of an unhealthy dynamic in the family, arguing that their parents’ inaction had exacerbated feelings of favouritism.

Regardless of the underlying issues at play, calling someone ugly is unlikely to be met with anything but hostility.
