Welcome To Wrexham is a new documentary following actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney – after unexpectedly buying historic Welsh football club Wrexham AFC.

The FX programme is set to explore Ryan and Rob’s decision to buy Wrexham, which is a fifth-tier team in the National League, and what happened next.

The pair first announced their intentions to buy the club in 2020, before setting up the company RR McReynolds in order to secure the purchase and complete the deal in February 2021.

Cameras have followed the duo around since then, giving fans a closer look as they endeavour to revive the third-oldest professional FA team in the world.

So, when can you watch Welcome To Wrexham on Disney Plus? And what time might it drop?

Here’s what you should know.

What time could Welcome To Wrexham be released on Disney Plus?

Welcome To Wrexham will air on Disney Plus on Thursday, August 25 in the UK.

While no exact release time has been announced, it’s commonly known that Disney Plus usually drops new shows and films at 8am UK time – which is 12am in the US.

American streaming service Hulu will air the documentary the day before on Wednesday, August 24.

It’s sure to be an interesting watch – both for football fans and followers of Ryan and Rob’s Hollywood careers – as even the trailer left some fans ‘sobbing‘.

What exactly is Welcome To Wrexham about?

Prior to the pair’s purchase, Wrexham AFC was owned by the Wrexham Supporter’s Trust, a fan-operated company, since 2011.

The acting duo were approved by the Trust for the £2 million takeover by 98.6%.

While they initially rejected any offer, they ‘soon changed their minds’ following the revelation of who was looking to purchase.

The series is said to be inspired by Netflix documentary Sunderland ‘Til I Die, which prompted Rob’s initial interest in buying an association football club.

It was also influenced by the show’s now executive director, Humphrey Ker, who was also interested in purchasing a club at the time.

Fans will get to see how the team has performed under the pair’s ownership, who both have no known experience in managing a sports team.

The series also looks to highlight the pair’s hopes of improving the team and bringing positive change to the local Wrexham community, as they express their intentions to be very hands-on owners.

Nick Grad, FX Entertainment’s original programming president said: ‘Rob and Ryan will take fans inside the sport as never before, pairing their genuine love for the game with the welcome challenge of building on the heritage of this club.’

Filming began back in December 2020, with the film crew present at the owners’ first visit to the team at the Wrexham vs. Maidenhead United FC game in October 2021.
