WITH housing costs soaring, one couple decided to quit their jobs to pursue their dreams – travelling the world with their kids.
The family-of-five sold everything they owned to live in a converted minibus – saving them a whopping £2k a month on rent and bills.
For years, beautician Kayla, 34, and plumber Badger Scotter, 35, were renting and trying to save to buy a home for their three kids.
But after Kayla’s best friend, Sarah, died of bowel cancer in 2020, the Oxfordshire couple decided to follow their dream to travel the world.
Badger, 35, told the Mirror : “The goal is to live a slow, simple, off-grid life. Our experience has been life-changing.”
After converting an old minibus and quitting their jobs, they set off on a European adventure.
They invested 14 months of time and £16,000 of savings converting the van into a home on wheels –complete with a wood burner, kitchen, four beds and an outdoor shower and compost toilet.
Kayla said: “It was absolute chaos. We sold everything we owned – our car and sofas – to add to our fund and just kept some trinkets and memories.”
The family visited 10 countries in Europe over 11 months, all while home-schooling their children.
They shared their adventures on YouTube, through their channel @TheScottersgooffgrid.
They using solar energy and water from three springs as well as growing their own food.
The family even adopted pets along the way – an abandoned cat they found in Croatia and a Labrador pup in Portugal.
Now the children are at local schools and they are still all living in the minibus while Badger builds a roundhouse, with a living area and bedrooms, and wooden barn on the site.
The couple, with children Wilfred, 10, Betsy, 7, and Trixie, 4, then settled in Portugal – still in their minivan.
Now, the family live in their bus in a forest off-the-grid.
They’re not the only ones to choose an unconventional home.
One couple transformed their caravan using bargains from Aldi, Primark and Home Bargains – it’s a pink chic paradise.
Meanwhile, TikTok user @brittty.bee showed how she transformed an old minibus into a luxury home on wheels on a budget.
Some people have even opted for an alternative lifestyle, deciding to live on a boat.
Like one couple, who ditched their high-flying jobs in London to travel the UK on a narrowboat.
