‘Was teaching from place of fear’ Oti Mabuse recalls Strictly worry dancing with Danny Mac

Oti Mabuse has recalled “teaching from a place of fear” during the 14th season of Strictly Come Dancing. That year, Oti went on to become the joint runners up with her celebrity pairing Danny Mac alongside Kevin Clifton and singer Louise Redknapp.

Now, in a frank confession, the 30-year-old revealed that while she may have sailed through to the final, it wasn’t always easy for her.

Her worries came after Oti and celebrity partner, wrestler and former boxer Anthony Ogogo, faced the tough elimination in series three.

Due to this, she was constantly reminding herself that her time in the competition was not “guaranteed”.

In a new episode of her podcast, The Rhythm of Life, Oti opened up to TV presenter Melvin Odoom.

“So in my head, every week you’re not guaranteed why would I make it to the final?” she said.

Oti added: “Now, who says that? I had the experience, the only experience that I ever had was going out of the show early.

“So the second season I was like, ‘I can’t, I can’t, I cannot go out early’, so I was driven from a place of fear.”

The professional dancer later explained: “I firmly believe anyone can learn how to dance anyone, it’s just levels of how you can take those different levels it’s different strides it’s a different technique.”

Speaking of how she teaches a celebrity Dance, Oti continued: “My methods work for the person that I’m with at that time.”

Addressing her time dancing with Danny Mac, she explained: “I couldn’t, what I did to you, I could never do that to Graeme, because he would be like, ‘He’s not even listening he’s jumping up and down, at the windows behind me, he’s not even listening'”.

“Whereas with Bill [Bailey], he’s like, ‘OK, so, give me the hardest that you can’, and I’m like, ‘God’, and he does it,” she joked.

However, despite being partnered with a different celebrity each year, the professional ballroom star believes the success is down to the determination of her partner.

“When I’m on Strictly you know, I go really crazy, but it was leading from a place of fear but now I lead from a place of love, I teach from a place of love.”

While she may have once thought she would never reach the final, she went on to win back to back in 2019 and 2020.
