Warm Home Discount – Savers able to get £140 off energy bills this winter

During the winter months of 2021 to early 2022, Britons may be able to get the £140 Warm Home Discount off their rising energy bills. This is a one-off discount made between October and March which is not paid directly to the claimant but administered through their supplier. Those who are eligible to receive the Warm Home Discount will not see their claims to other benefit schemes, such as the Cold Weather Payment or Winter Fuel Payment, affected.

There are two primary ways in which people can qualify for the Warm Home Discount with claimants falling into either the “core” or “broader qualifying group.

If someone gets the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit, they will be able to receive the Warm Home Discount as part of the “core” group of claimants.

For Pension Credit claimants, the discount scheme opened on October 18 and will be applied to an energy bill by the end of March 2022.

To qualify for the “broader” group, claimants need to be on low income and meet their energy supplier’s criteria to receive the discount, which can vary depending on the company.

Suppliers are responsible for determining whether someone is eligible to receive the Warm Home Discount as part of the “broader” group.

Similar to the “group” group, qualifying low income households will receive the discount to their bill by March 31, 2022.

Any claimants with a pre-pay or pay-as-you-go electricity meter may be able to still qualify for the Warm Home Discount.

DON’T MISS:

Claimants will need to stay with their energy supplier throughout the winter months in order to claim the discount.

Energy suppliers will inform pre-pay meter customers as to the means they will receive the discount, which can be administered using a voucher.

Recently, energy supplier giant Bulb confirmed to its customers that it was going into administration in another blow to UK consumers as the nation’s energy crisis continues.

Bulb is one of the many energy companies which were signed up as part of the Warm Home Discount scheme for this year.

Following this revelation, energy regulator Ofgem explained what is likely to happen to Bulb customers who have applied or are eligible to receive the Warm Home Discount.

On its website, the regulator stated: “We’re working closely with suppliers to make sure customers in the scheme’s ‘core group’ can continue to automatically receive the discount.

“Any broader group customer who gets the Warm Home Discount and is switched to a new supplier if their supplier fails will be able to reapply for the discount. Once we’ve appointed a new supplier, you should contact them for details.”

If your energy supplier goes out of business, Ofgem will assist in introducing you to a new supplier, which may be part of the Warm Home Discount scheme.

In response to this development, Citizens Advice cautioned those affected to “sit tight” as there will remain financial support and potential discounts off

Kate Morrison, Citizens Advice Scotland’s Fair Market Spokesperson, said: “Bulb is the largest energy supplier to exit the market as the energy price crisis continues. We know that a lot of households are likely to be worried about what this means for them.

“Our advice to consumers is clear – sit tight. The regulator Ofgem and the UK Government have a robust safety net in place that will ensure you still have access to energy, and households won’t lose any credit that was on their account.

“People struggling with high energy bills can also contact the Citizens Advice network for help to maximise their incomes.

“Last year we unlocked £147million for people and our advice is free, impartial and confidential.”
