David Yardin and Chris Sotomayor’s variant cover for January’s Venom #4 pays tribute to Todd McFarlane’s iconic Amazing Spider-Man #300 cover.
Artist David Yardin has teamed with colorist Chris Sotomayor for a special variant cover for January’s Venom #4, which pays tribute to Todd McFralane’s iconic cover for 1988’s Amazing Spider-Man #300, spaghetti webbing and all.
Following the conclusion of Donny Cates and Ryan Stegman’s character-defining run on Venom, the title is headed for a relaunch later this month courtesy of writers Al Ewing and Ram V, artist Bryan Hitch, inker Andrew Currie and colorist Alex Sinclair, with Venom #1 slated for release on Oct. 27. Venom #4 is scheduled to hit comic shops on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2022. Yardin and Sotomayor’s variant for issue #4 is one of 10 similar homage variants Marvel will put out throughout the month of January.
“This January, your favorite artists will pay tribute to some of the greatest comic book covers in Marvel history with all-new Homage Variant Covers,” the House of Ideas wrote in its official press release. “Featuring new artwork from superstar artists David Yardin, Will Sliney, Mike McKone, Creees Lee, Philip Tan, David Nakayama, Pete Woods, Ken Lashley, Stephen Mooney and Marvel’s Stormbreaker Peach Momoko, this exciting collection will allow fans to re-experience classic Marvel covers including takes on Wolverine, Spider-Man, Thor and Hulk’s first appearances as well as other historic moments!”
Written by David Michelinie and illustrated by Todd McFarlane with colors by Bob Sharen and cover art by McFarlane, 1988’s Amazing Spider-Man #300 is a rather historic Marvel release indeed. In addition to being the 300th issue of Marvel’s main Spider-Man title, the book marked Eddie Brock’s first full appearance as Venom.
Venom, of course, became of Marvel’s most popular villains following his introduction, even going on to become an anti-hero in his own right as the Lethal Protector. Venom has also been adapted into live-action on multiple occasions, with Topher Grace first playing Eddie Brock in 2007’s Spider-Man 3. Tom Hardy later took on the role of Eddie for the 2018 solo film Venom and its recently released sequel, Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
