Urgent warning for drivers as storm Arwen set to hit – all you need to know

MOTORISTS must stay away from trees and avoid driving if possible as storm Arwen approaches UK shores, the RAC warned.

Britain is set to be battered by gale-force winds up to 90mph as the Met Office gave a rare red warning indicating danger to life for certain parts of the country.

The RAC warned drivers against all non-essential journeys and said there was a “much greater risk” of trees and power lines falling.

Breakdown spokesperson Rod Dennis said: “Drivers are suddenly being thrust into some of the worst weather conditions they’re likely to face on the roads.

“There is now a very high chance of Storm Arwen causing major disruption in parts of south east Scotland and north east England.

“We strongly urge motorists in these areas to stay safe by parking away from trees and avoiding driving if at all possible.”

Dennis added that even drivers in areas with only amber warnings should consider postponing their journeys unless essential.

He said: “As well as making driving much more challenging, strong winds cause an increased risk of trees and powerlines falling.”
