Today 41,130 new infections were reported, and two weeks ago the country saw 66,183.

Deaths are up on from yesterday, at a tragic 205 compared to 15.

But this will be in part due to a backlog often seen following the weekend, where the fatalities take longer to be recorded.

Yesterday Boris Johnson announced he’s “finally giving people back their freedom” in the House of Commons.

He unveiled his ‘Living with Covid Plan’, with Thursday earmarked for a major change in isolation rules.

It comes as Brits who haven’t yet had their boosters have been urged to get their vital shot, as restrictions lift.

It will help the UK to live with the virus and get us out of the pandemic quicker, ensuring infections stay as low as possible.

Many won’t have had theirs after thousands were struck down with the bug over the Christmas period, and had to wait 28 days before booking back in.

Now is the time to make sure you’ve had your booster shot, to keep cases down and avoid spreading the bug as restrictions lift.

Dr Michael Head, senior research fellow in global health at the University of Southampton, warned: “There are still millions of people who need their booster dose.”

Speaking to the House of Commons the PM first sent his best wishes to the Queen, who this weekend tested positive for Covid.

Mr Johnson then outlined his vision for a freer Britain, detailing fresh plans for isolation rules and testing.

He added: “It is a reminder that this virus has not gone away, but because of the efforts made by this country over the past two years we can now deal with it in a very different way.

“So we move from government restrictions to personal responsibility.

“While the pandemic is not over we have now passed the peak of the Omicron wave. the link between infection and severe disease substantially weakened.”
