Twitter says it limited usage to eliminate bots, bad actors – Times of India

Twitter owner Elon Musk introduced a tiered cap on the number of tweets users can see. At that time, Musk said that the limit is being introduced to “address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation”. The company has now provided an update in this regard.
According to the social media company, it temporarily limited usage so “it could detect and eliminate bots and other bad actors that are harming the platform.” It added that if the company would have given ana advance notice on these actions, the bots or bad actor would have altered their behaviour to evade detection.
“To ensure the authenticity of our user base we must take extreme measures to remove spam and bots from our platform,” the company said.”At a high level, we are working to prevent these accounts from 1) scraping people’s public Twitter data to build AI models and 2) manipulating people and conversation on the platform in various ways,” it added.
Musk has always spoken against bot accounts on Twitter. He even said that one of the top priorities would be eliminating the spam and scam bots and the bot armies on Twitter as they make the product much worse.
Last year, Musk also accused Twitter for hiding the actual number of bots on the platform and then tried to back out from the purchase of the company.

A few people affected
Twitter also claims that the restrictions affect a small percentage of people using the platform.
“We will provide an update when the work is complete. As it relates to our customers, effects on advertising have been minimal,” it added.
A report claimed that the changes at Twitter affected the discoverability of tweets and pages on Google Search. The company acknowledged that it was aware of the limited ability to show Twitter results.
“We’re aware that our ability to crawl Twitter.com has been limited, affecting our ability to display tweets and pages from the site in search results,” spokesperson Lara Levin was quoted as saying.
“Websites have control over whether crawlers can access their content,” Levin added.
