Tszyu fight thrown into chaos as restrictions bite

Queensland’s reluctance to open its borders has cost it the chance to host Tim Tszyu’s mega-fight against Japan’s Takeshi Inoue in November.

The bout, which was to have taken place at the Gold Coast Convention Centre, will be moved interstate due to concerns over COVID-19 quarantine restrictions.

Sydney and Canberra have emerged as possible locations for the fight, along with Newcastle, which has hosted Tszyu’s last two fights.

The promoters, No Limit Boxing, have confirmed to Wide World of Sports that the fight is still expected to go ahead on November 17, once a new venue is announced.

“The ongoing uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically the impact of hotel quarantine on the health and welfare of our fighters made it impossible for the fight to continue in Queensland,” No Limit Boxing CEO George Rose said.

“I want to stress that we are completely supportive of the hotel quarantine system and would like to specifically thank Queensland Health for doing all they could to make this fight happen on the Gold Coast.

“I can promise everyone that No Limit Boxing will be back on the Gold Coast bigger and better than ever in 2022.”

Tszyu can lock-in a shot at a world title fight against Brian Castano if he can beat Inoue.
