The Marvel Cinematic Universe has entered Phase 5, ushering in a plethora of upcoming shows and films this year. Additionally, two films from this phase have already been released.
Here is a curated list of movies and shows that we believe deserve your attention, including some that are already available.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
This has to be at the top of our list. The film not only signifies director James Gunn’s departure from the MCU, but also serves as his farewell to the Guardians of the Galaxy before their individual journeys begin. However, it’s much more than that. The film completely alters our perception of one of our cherished Guardians, providing us with a more in-depth understanding of their presence throughout the entire MCU. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 was released in theatres on May 5th, 2023.
Secret Invasion
In Secret Invasion, Nick Fury makes a comeback as he delves into a possible invasion by the Skrulls, a shape-shifting alien race that has been secretly residing on Earth for years. The series has already premiered, so expect to see new episodes on Disney+ every week.
Loki: Season 2
Following Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Kang is emerging as a significant antagonist in Phase 5. However, the multiverse and the character of Kang were initially explored in 2021’s Loki. It’s worth noting that Tom Hiddleston returned to portray the titular character following Avengers: Endgame. Now, we eagerly anticipate Season 2 of Loki, which promises to delve deeper into Kang and his role in the multiverse. The second season is set to premiere on Disney+ on October 6.
The Marvels
The Marvels trailer featured the team-up of Captain Marvel (Carol Danvers), Monica Rambeau with her newly acquired powers, and Kamala Khan, also known as Ms. Marvel. We can expect to witness their thrilling action sequences in this highly anticipated film, set to be released in theatres on November 10th of this year.
X-Men ’97
Over 30 years since its initial release, X-Men: The Animated Series is set to make a comeback, for both new and old generations of Marvel fans. X-Men ’97 will soon be available on Disney+, scheduled for release in Fall 2023.
Echo
Echo made her debut in the 2021 series Hawkeye, and now she is set to make a triumphant return to the MCU with her own standalone show. Alaqua Cox will reprise her role as Maya Lopez, the only deaf superhero in the MCU. Fans can look forward to seeing her team up with Charlie Cox’s Daredevil, as well as the return of characters like Kingpin. Echo is slated for release on Disney+ Hotstar on November 29, 2023.
What If…? Season 2
Marvel’s What If…? Season 1, released in 2021, is widely regarded as one of the top shows from Marvel released recently. It showcased stories from various corners of the multiverse, culminating in a compelling narrative overseen by The Watcher. As the MCU has delved even deeper into the multiverse since 2021, we eagerly anticipate the fresh insights that What If…? Season 2 will offer. Marvel confirmed last year that the new season will debut in 2023.
Ironheart
We will get to witness more of Riri Williams, introduced in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, in her own standalone series. We caught a glimpse of her suit in the 2022 film, and now we anticipate discovering how this spiritual successor to Iron Man will unfold. Ironheart is scheduled to premiere sometime this year, in 2023, although the exact date has not been announced.
Agatha: Coven of Chaos
Not much is known about this upcoming Disney+ show, except for the fact that Agatha, a fellow Darkhold reader like the Scarlet Witch, whom we were introduced to in WandaVision, is receiving her own series. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige announced last year that Agatha: Coven of Chaos will be available on Disney+ in Winter 2023.
Deadpool 3
This film is highly anticipated as the potential introduction of the X-Men into the MCU. Ryan Reynolds returns as the iconic character, and joining him is Hugh Jackman, known for his portrayal of Wolverine. Deadpool 3 is scheduled to be released in theatres on May 3, 2024.
Finally, a special shoutout to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Although technically part of the Sony Spider-Man Universe (SSU), we believe that this list would be incomplete for Marvel fans without mentioning this masterpiece. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is the second instalment in Miles Morales’ story, and it is now playing in theatres near you.
