Tony Bellew delivers warning to Canelo Alvarez after Tyson Fury question
Tony Bellew has told Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez what he should expect against Junior Makabu, and has warned the Mexican’s challenger he’ll need to make a fast start.
Canelo looks set to make the huge step up to cruiserweight as he aims to become a five-weight champion, having become the undisputed champion in the super middleweight division against Caleb Plant earlier this month.
Alvarez came face to face with WBC champion Makabu last week, and looks likely to meet him in the ring next May.
Having already established himself as one of boxing’s greatest pound-for-pound fighters, Canelo will have to put on close to a stone to make the step up to cruiserweight and potentially add to his collection of titles.
His first opponent in the division is a man Bellew knows well, having beaten Makabu inside three rounds at Goodison Park back in 2016, and he’s warned the African fighter he’ll have to step out of his comfort zone when he comes up against Canelo.
“Makabu likes to have a look and that’s why I tried to jump on him in our fight,” said Bellew when speaking to DAZN.
“He’s very relaxed in the early rounds because he wants to have a proper look at what’s in front of him then go to work in the later rounds. I wasn’t going to give him that opportunity and that’s why I started as quick as I did.
“Makabu has a high guard and dangerous left hand and he has to get that into play from the first bell. Canelo is going to come in heavy so he could lose some of what makes him special but Makabu will still be the bigger man and he has to make that count.
“His size can be a big asset but he has to use it from the moment the fight starts otherwise he’ll be playing catch up against the best fighter in the sport.”
Bellew’s comments come after Canelo was asked about the likelihood of stepping up to the heavyweight division where he might face the likes of Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua and Oleksandr Usyk.
“A year ago, I said no to cruiserweight and here we are. Therefore, I don’t think so, but I don’t know with Eddy sometimes… My body wouldn’t allow that to happen,” he said.
