Tigers firebrand breaks silence on sideline fight

Wests Tigers firebrand David Klemmer says he has nothing to regret over a sideline scuffle with Newcastle recruit Jackson Hastings.

It was an ugly postscript to Sunday’s game at Leichhardt Oval, when Hastings approached Tigers youngster Tommy Talau to apologise for accidentally breaking his nose during the contest.

Talau wanted no bar of the apology, and pushed his former teammate in the chest several times in an effort to make Hastings leave.

Fiery forward Klemmer then approached the fracas and also pushed Hastings, firing off some angry words in the process.

It has since been suggested the reaction from two Tigers players was over the top and unnecessary.

Klemmer defends Hastings scuffle

On Wednesday, Klemmer fronted media and was grilled about those claims.

“It’s just one of those things, I was looking after my mate,” he said.

“My mate didn’t want to talk (to Hastings) so I sort of just intervened and cut it out.

“It was nothing that bad.”

Klemmer became agitated by questioning from 9News journalist Danny Weidler.

The question was posed whether the scuffle was a result of any personal history between Hastings, Klemmer, and Talau.

Hastings played at the Tigers last year, before an off-season switch with Klemmer.

“I don’t know the bloke,” Klemmer said of Hastings.

“It’s your teammate… would you do it for your mate? If it’s confrontation to your mate would you do it?

“I just went over there, it was pretty harmless.”

Hastings has left a number of NRL teams on bad terms previously, and rumours of a rift with the Tigers won’t die.

He was previously forced to leave Manly after an altercation with Sea Eagles skipper Daly Cherry-Evans.
