Three Man Utd stars ruled out of Real Sociedad trip die to illness and injury

Anthony Martial is not quite ready to return from injury for Manchester United, while Antony and Jadon Sancho will also miss the trip to Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Martial has made just three Premier League appearances so far this season, hampered by a string of minor problems, most recently a back issue.

When he has played, he has looked good, scoring twice in his three Premier League outings, and once in his only Europa League appearance.

The Frenchman is back in training and there was hope that he could feature against Real Sociedad, but Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he is continuing his rehab work and is not yet ready to be involved.

The Dutchman also ruled out Jadon Sancho, who is unwell and cannot feature.

‘Jadon was ill,’ Ten Hag told a press conference on Wednesday. ‘Anthony Martial is still in recovery and rehab, so he has to finish that. He did train this morning, so we are going in the right direction.’

Brazilian winger Antony missed United’s Premier League meeting with West Ham on Sunday and remains out of contention on Thursday, with the BBC confirming that the summer signing is staying in Manchester on an individual fitness work.

Bruno Fernandes picked up a suspension for a booking against West Ham at the weekend, but that only applies to the Premier League so he is available.

After losing 1-0 at home to the Spanish side, United must win by two goals or more in San Sebastian to top the group and Ten Hag believes it is important to do so.

‘Clear. Obviously, it’s important,’ he said. ‘We can win tomorrow night. We know what we have to do win by a two-goal margin. But if you want to win the trophy you have to win all the games so we have to win every one.’
