Thousands of expensive 20p coins in circulation – check if you’ve got one

A 20p has sold for 450 times its value due to its characteristics.

As the first coin in over 300 years to have no date it’s classed as extremely rare, writes the Liverpool Echo .

According to The Royal Mint, around 250,000 coins like this made it into circulation.

The coin entered circulation in 2008 just as the new Royal Shield 20p coins were first introduced, with some having no date on the back.

But a batch was made that have no date either side.

Coin experts Change Checker said: “This coin is regarded by many as the Holy Grail of change collecting, and back in 2008, the undated 20p saga encouraged an entire country to start carefully checking their coins.”

In August 2021, a similar coin sold for £56, according to the Mirror.

If you’re planning on buying a coin, be aware of fakes being sold on eBay so you don’t get scammed out of money.

You can get coins verified by the Royal Mint to check they’re the real deal.

A Royal Mint spokesperson said: “The Royal Mint can confirm a small number of new design 20p coins were incorrectly struck using the obverse from the previous design, as a result these coins bear no date.

“The issue was quickly resolved. The Royal Mint would like to assure the public that these are legal tender.”
