While peace has been restored to Asgard, Thor finds himself uneasy and ready to give up one of his most prized birthrights.
WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Thor #15, by Donny Cates, Michele Bandini, Elisabetta D’Amico, Matt Wilson and VC’s Joe Sabino, on sale now.
Ever since ascending to take the throne of Asgard following the 2019 crossover event War of the Realms, Thor’s reign has been marked by one crisis after another, as he’s experienced the burden that comes with wearing the kingly crown firsthand. From a questionable alliance with Galactus to Thor’s twisted shadow Donald Blake resurfacing to menace anyone who has ever wielded the Odin Force, Asgard has barely had a moment’s peace under Thor’s leadership. A
nd as Thor confronts his crisis of conscience while bearing the responsibilities that come with the throne, the God of Thunder decides to surrender his trusty hammer Mjolnir and refocus his priorities moving forward in Thor #15.
Shortly after Thor claimed the throne, he noticed that Mjolnir had progressively been growing heavier at his touch and more difficult for him to wield. Disturbed by this unsettling trend and the implication that his worthiness was steadily diminishing in the face of his new, kingly status, Thor began experimenting with Mjolnir, including temporarily letting an ordinary mortal in Oklahoma briefly wield it for himself. And in the aftermath of the recently concluded crossover event King in Black, Thor found picking up Mjolnir to be a near-impossible feat while Loki could lift the hammer with relative ease.
Concerned, Thor visited the Avengers back on Earth and found that his control of Mjolnir had grown even more problematic, with the hammer taking on a mind of its own and striking at Captain America of its own apparent accord. Meeting privately with Captain America back at Avengers Mountain, Thor confesses his own misgivings about his relationship with his earthly friends and decides to leave Mjolnir behind at the Avengers headquarters, with Thor feeling that the hammer no longer sees him as worthy as Thor has become more of a regent than a warrior.
This marks the second time Thor has been deemed unworthy to wield his own hammer in recent history, with the God of Thunder losing his worthiness during the 2014 crossover event Original Sin. As Nick Fury stood against the Avengers while several earth-shattering secrets across the Marvel Universe began to leak out, Fury informed Thor that Gorr the God Butcher was right about the unworthy nature of gods. This revelation cost Thor his ability to wield Mjolnir until a new version of the hammer was forged during War of the Realms.
Thor’s decision to surrender Mjolnir also stands to possibly rewrite the Asgardian’s potential future, with the elder King Thor seen still wielding the hammer well into the Odinson’s twilight years. Thor has seen the prospect of balancing his kingly responsibilities with being the warrior that the hammer deserves an impossibility, ultimately choosing his duty to his kingdom over the privilege of wielding one of the most powerful weapons in the Marvel Universe.
After months of Mjolnir growing increasingly fickle and seemingly malfunctioning, Thor appears to have gotten to the bottom of why his trusty hammer no longer favors him. Rather than risk the hammer falling into the wrong hands or gathering dust, Thor has left the weapon with one man worthy enough to wield it on multiple occasions and save the day. And as Thor turns his full attention towards reigning over Asgard as its king, the God of Thunder is in need of a new weapon as he charts an uncertain future for himself.
