The job market right now is competitive to say the least.

In 2022, the number of people looking for work rose while the number of vacancies fell, and skyrocketing prices amid stagnating wages mean well-paid roles can attract hundreds of applicants.

In the dog-eat-dog world of job-hunting, it can feel as though the best positions are only open to those with degrees. But that’s not necessarily the case.

Online learning platform Laba analysed 2,000 UK vacancies to find the industries where you can expect to earn over £42,000 without getting into student debt – and most of them you can do from home.

The majority of the professions featured in the top five are in marketing and branding, where formal qualifications are less important than creativity and problem-solving.

This line of work is also particularly results-driven, so employees are judged less on uni grades and more on how they can benefit a company.

Eugene Feldman, сo-founder and CEO of Laba, commented: ‘Take a look at the professions that were in demand 50 years ago – many of them don’t exist now.

‘New exciting jobs pop up daily and the rule of 10,000 hours of practice doesn’t work anymore – in today’s fast-paced world, your main skill is the ability to learn and jump on new opportunities.’

He continues: ‘That’s why your job should never become a sentence for life. If you are unsatisfied with the salary, conditions, or workload, you can and should change it.

‘What’s more, you don’t need to spend years and your life savings on a new degree – sometimes, a quick reskill is enough to nail that job offer.’

Forget your mortarboard, all you need to get into these careers is enthusiasm and a great work ethic. If you do a few short courses to build your knowledge base in your chosen field, even better.
