There could be another Lord of the Rings game on the way

From Weta, of all places

Lord of the Rings games kind of pop out of the ground like Athelas. Outside of the highly promoted ones from EA, they can just spring up on you without warning. One day when you least expect it, bam! The Gollum game will be out. For now, we ponder the possibilities of this potential Lord of the Rings game from Weta.

You might recognize the name from the Jackson films! Weta Digital has been creating visual effects since the ’90s, but really blew up when they worked on the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Well, they’re working on games, too.

All of the info so far comes from this Facebook call to arms, which is asking for a producer that can help them make “cutting edge games,” noting that they are aiming for a “PC release.” Digging further into the producer role on offer in the interactive department, it seems as if it’s based on “an incredibly rich and inspiring license that will fill fans and players around the world with delight.” Hmmmmmmm! The listing also mentions “consoles.”

Now, Weta could be supporting another core studio, including Amazon, who is poised to release the upcoming Lord of the Rings TV show. But there’s no shortage of digital games in Middle-earth, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see one just get announced one day. Did you know there’s a semi-recent Lord of the Rings mobile game? Bam! Got ya.
