The Wiggles expected to take out Hottest 100 number one with Tame Impala cover
The triple Hottest 100 has kicked off, and it’s expected to sound very different this year. Follow along with us live as we bring you the highlights.
Prepare yourself for the inevitable echoes of “shoulda been higher” as the nation’s music lovers brace themselves for triple j’s Hottest 100.
Radios across the country have been blaring since the countdown kicked off at 12pm AEDT on the youth radio station, but while number one is still anyone’s game — there have already been some upsets.
With the station flipping the countdown on its head this year, playing out the “Hottest 200” songs yesterday, instead of the day after the main event as it has in the past, listeners erupted on hearing some of their favourites ranked surprisingly low.
One song in particular — rave anthem Marea (We’ve Lost Dancing) by Fred Again and the Blessed Madonna — came in at number 168, despite reliable prediction site 100 Warm Tunas placing it within the hundred top songs earlier in the week.
The song, by British producer Fred Again, describes the loss of dancing and clubbing during the pandemic, and had been a popular choice on the top ten lists of some of triple j’s presenters.
Meanwhile, Abbie Chatfield’s viral ketamine rant-turned club banger whipped up by Melbourne DJ Candy Moore came in at 161, despite the former reality star driving a strong campaign for votes.
The song that came the closest to cracking the Hottest 100 at 101 was Time I Love To Waste from Sydney pop sensation MAY-A.
So who is expected to take out the coveted number one spot for 2021?
According to Warm Tunas — in a wildly unexpected twist — it could be The Wiggles.
The beloved children’s group visited triple j’s Like A Version studio last year for a bouncy cover of Tame Impala’s Elephant fused with verses from kid’s party favourite Fruit Salad, and the delightfully wholesome take thrilled listeners.
So much so, Warm Tunas, which has been eerily accurate in the past, has it likely to place between one and two.
The entire countdown will certainly have a different sound from years gone by, with Justin Bieber also expected to rank high in the list, despite once being banned from the voting poll after the station’s memorable Taylor Swift controversy of 2014.
Warm Tunas has Bieber’s hit with Sydney wonder The Kid LAROI Stay potentially at spot three, with station favourites Gang Of Youths with the angel of 8th avenue at two.
Billie Eilish, winner of the 2019 Hottest 100 with Bad Guy, is also expected to appear somewhere in the upper echelons with her hit Happier Than Ever.
We’ll be updating you with the list live right here.
