Settling on a baby name can feel like an incredibly tough decision – especially when the newborn will be a future King.

It seems the Prince and Princess of Wales also felt this struggle when it came to naming their firstborn.

But the royal couple adopted a slightly more unconventional method to help make the final call.

Kate and William enlisted the help of their dog, Lupo, to pick the name.

According to The Times, the couple reportedly wrote all the possible names on scraps of paper and put them on the floor of their home.

They then let their English cocker spaniel see which piece of paper he went over to after some sniffing – and George was the winner.

Sadly, there’s no confirmation of whether this unusual technique was used to name Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis, too.

Lupo has also since passed away, but the family now own another cocker spaniel, Orla, who was a gift from Kate’s brother.

While Lupo might not be around anymore, it’s clear the dog’s legacy lives on in George’s name.

How to pick a baby name, according to experts:

Baby naming experts, Bella Baby, say these are the things to keep in mind when picking the right name:

Is it a passing trend?

Is there a meaning behind the name?

What will the initials be?

How does it flow with the middle and last name?

Do you want there to be a nickname?

Spelling is key
