Think you’re clumsy? The residents of Chippenham might have just pipped you to the post.

According to NHS data, Chippenham in Wiltshire is the most accident-prone city in the UK.

Personal Injury experts at claims.co.uk looked into the total number of bone fractures in each UK city, finding that between 2021 and 2022, Chippenham had 22,720 A&E visits with 2,880 for broken bones.

This means over 12% of visits in the area are for fractures only. Whoops!

Meanwhile, ranking second, Truro in Cornwall had over 9% of their A&E visits for broken bones. In third is Norwich, with 12,585 fractures in one year.

Portsmouth, however, is the least accident-prone place in the UK.

Out of 58,680 trips to A&E, only 0.6% were for a fracture – much lower than the national average 5.3%.

Most accident prone places in the UK

  1. Chippenham
  2. Truro
  3. Norwich
  4. Harwich
  5. Torquay and Salisbury
  6. Shepton Mallet
  7. Worcester
  8. Newark and Harrogate
  9. Poole
  10. Ashford and Dudley

The average age of the population in these areas might have some impact on the results.

Older generations in rural areas like Cornwall might be more likely to break brittle bones, while in younger towns with a high student population like Portsmouth, other health issues are likely to be more common.

Sasha Quail from claims.co.uk said: ‘A broken bone can be disruptive to a person’s everyday life; for those in work, a fracture can result in a loss of income, or a difficulty in caring for loved ones. It is also extremely painful and time consuming.

‘This research reveals the large disparities in accident prone towns and cities across the UK; Chippenham’s fracture rate is more than 20 times higher than Portsmouth’s.

‘If this accident was caused by a third-party, the most common claim in personal injury is negligence. Claiming compensation can help people who have suffered an injury to receive the money they are owed for their discomfort and disruption.’
