The Queen’s aunt who became the oldest royal ever in the world aged 102

The Queen is currently 96 years old and is still going strong, but she still has some way to go to become the oldest royal to have ever lived. That honour belongs to Princess Alice, Her Majesty’s aunt. Princess Alice lived to 102 years old and was often described as ‘the last great Edwardian’. She was active as a royal from the moment she married into the family in 1935 to the moment she finally retired from her royal duties aged 98.

Known to be a very dutiful royal, she was also dedicated to her staff and when she passed on 2004 she left payments of over £30,000 to them. This was revealed when her will was published in 2015, showing that her butlers, ladies-in-waiting and gardeners had been left money from her rather modest estate.

Born as Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, she was the third daughter of a Scottish duke. Despite being born into a life of splendour she had little time for high society and instead dedicated her early life to travelling the world.

Aged 34 she married Prince Henry, the younger brother of King George VI (the Queen’s dad). She then became the Duchess of Gloucester and took up royal duties, becoming the air chief commandant of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during World War Two.

She was known to be very close with her niece, Queen Elizabeth. When Princess Anne passed a statement from Her Majesty said: “The Queen was greatly saddened by the death of her aunt, Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester.

After the Princess’s marriage to Henry, Duke of Gloucester, in 1935, Princess Alice supported the work of King George VI and then The Queen over many years throughout war and peace, and despite the tragedy of the early death of her son, Prince William. The Queen remembers with gratitude Princess Alice’s service to the monarchy, and to the country.”
