The Power Rangers’ Strangest Ally Just Got a Shocking New Origin

The Omega Rangers’ most unsuspecting crew member has just had their own shockingly tragic origin revealed.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Power Rangers #10, available now from Boom! Studios.

The Power Rangers are no strangers to alien beings with tragic backstories, even among their own ranks. Typically, these dark pasts filled with deep seated traumas have driven those who lived them to commit questionable if not outright unspeakable acts in desperate bids to protect themselves where they once could not. This has held true for more than a few of the Rangers’ greatest allies and enemies, though not for all of them. In fact, it is Yale’s own recently revealed origin that has shed a light on how much one ferocious feline can overcome to transform themselves into a true hero.

While the Omega Rangers keep busy dealing with Safe Haven’s latest refugees and a lack of faith on the part of their own deities, their pet alien cat monster Yale has taken the opportunity to unwind and observe the locals. In turn, Yale himself is also being observed, and apparently has been for quite some time. As seen in Power Rangers #10 by Ryan Parrott, Rachel Wagner, Moises Hidalgo, Raul Angulo, Jose Enrique Fernandez, and Ed Dukeshire, someone has been watching Yale from the very beginning, and what they have witnessed is nothing short of heartbreaking. Yale was doted on by his mother as the runt of the litter, a designation which put Yale in prime position to escape from the cruel traders that had captured his family. Unfortunately, this also meant that Yale was in no position to save them, and even as a cub that weighed heavily on his soul. Regardless of the fact that none of it was his fault, Yale blamed himself for everything that had happened.

Left to wander through the icy landscape alone, Yale found comfort in the arms of a young child, one that he swore to always protect. When the Morphin Grid was disrupted during the Shattering and its energies made their way into a seemingly random assortment of beings, Yale was one of those lucky few. This exposure to pure Morphin Energy transformed Yale into a far more intimidating version of himself, which did not sit well with the parents of his young owner.

When Yale was cast out of their home, the boy wandered the ice and snow in search of his pet until he became dangerously lost. With the power that then flowed through him, Yale was able to rescue his young friend from certain death shortly before the Omega Rangers would come to collect him during 2020’s Go Go Power Rangers #31 by Ryan Parrott, Sina Grace, and Francesco Mortarino. As one of those touched by the Grid, it was the Rangers’ duty to contain him until he could be cured, though that doesn’t seem to have really ever happened at all. When Yale’s observer is revealed to be none other than the remaining consciousness of the Blue Emissary, it becomes clear that his connection to the Morphin Grid never truly went away, and it likely existed long before the Shattering even took place.

This would go a long way towards explaining how Yale has maintained his incredible strength and resilience after having supposedly been cured of his connection to the Morphin Grid. In recent months Yale has chased away interstellar vampires and saved the children of Safe Haven from its own greatest monsters, and never has he hesitated to go to such lengths in the pursuit of protecting those he cares about.

It’s that same dedication to standing between the innocent and harm’s way that has made Yale such an outstanding ally to the Omega Rangers, and it is likely what will see him rise to ever greater heights with the Blue Emissary’s blessing. Yale might be the most unsuspecting member of the Omegas’ crew, but that will only make it all the better when the Rangers discover exactly what their feline friend is made of.
