The Most Important Spider-Verse Hero is Back

Spider-Gwen has just teamed up with the most important hero in the entire Spider-Verse, and her appearance is a major cause for concern.

WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Spider-Gwen: Gwen-Verse #1, available now from Marvel.

Gwen Stacy has stepped back into the spotlight of the Marvel Universe thanks to her own brand-new series. In fact, she and near-endless versions of her from across the Multiverse have become the latest breakout comic book stars, though they are hardly alone. Not only is Spider-Gwen about to traverse realities to confront various versions of herself, but she’s also brought another Spider-Verse hero along for the ride. Unfortunately, no matter how much help Spider-Zero might be, her presence alone is a powerful indicator of just how high the stakes truly are.

Gwen Stacy has been struggling with strained relationships at home, while the temporal pop-star Finale has set in motion the next great threat for Gwen to deal with as well. As seen in the pages of Spider-Gwen: Gwen-Verse #1 (by Tim Seeley, Jodi Nishijima, Federico Blee, and VC’s Ariana Maher), the titular hero has unintentionally interfered in Finale’s plot to resurrect herself across every era. Because of this, various versions of Gwen have cropped up throughout the ages, and the havoc they have wrought has attracted the attention of none other than the Master Weaver herself, Spider-Zero.

First introduced in 2019’s Spider-Verse #1 (by Jed MacKay, Juan Frigeri, Stacey Lee, Arthur Adams, James Harren, Dike Ruan, and Sheldon Vella), the young woman who’s known only as Spider-Zero narrowly escaped her reality’s destruction by stepping into the Multiverse. After years of hopping from world to world, Spider-Zero became disillusioned with the idea of ever having a proper home again. Despite this personal tragedy, Spider-Zero has found a place among the infinite cosmos as the Master Weaver, the protector of the Web of Life and Destiny that acts as a map of all realities. As the protector of the Web, Spider-Zero knows all too well what one seemingly minor event can do to countless timelines, and her appearance alongside Gwen in the present is a clear sign that the damage has already been done.

Spider-Zero doesn’t just begin uncovering the alternate Gwens that have been strewn throughout time, but she can physically see and touch the frayed strands of reality that have been altered by Finale’s plot. Though that doesn’t help her to pin down any specifics regarding these new variants, it does give the heroes a starting point when it comes to setting things right. It also indicates how delicate of a situation they are in more than anything else ever could. Spider-Zero’s traversal of the timeline puts the full scope of the damage that has already been done quite literally within her grasp. As much as it may help for her to see so clearly what must be fixed, the fact that it is all so obvious speaks to the seemingly insurmountable odds that Spider-Zero and Gwen are up against.

Although there couldn’t possibly be a better ally for the mission at hand than Spider-Zero, the thought that Finale has caused enough harm to necessitate her appearance in the first place is genuinely unsettling. If it weren’t for Gwen getting caught in the middle of it all, there is no telling how much more damage could have been caused.

On the other hand, Gwen’s new variants have already decimated Gwen’s present through whatever actions they have already taken in the past. Thankfully, the two best heroes for the job are already racing through the ages to repair the timeline. And with any luck, they’ll be able to rewrite history the way it should be before Finale catches up to them and does so for herself.
