The money-saving hotel room feature that guests loathe – and how to turn it off

THE humble hotel room fridge has been causing a stir among holidaymakers with many blaming the common feature for sleepless nights.

While most guests know to avoid pricey mini-bar prices these days, the fridges come in handy for guests looking to save travel money with a place to store supermarket food and drink.

But when it comes to budget versus quality of sleep, many would prefer the latter, with guests complaining that the constant buzzing noise from the appliance keeps them awake.

Fridges make a soft humming sound as the compressor inside the appliance gets to work.

Tiktok user Rexford, who is known as @Rexfordwagner on the social media platform, said: “I hate loud mini-fridges in hotel rooms.

“The problem is a lot of mini fridges have a little ice box that’ll get icy around this [metal component].

“And, when you unplug the fridge, it’ll melt and just make a mess on your floor.”

He showed other users how to “properly” turn off fridges inside hotel rooms, by unplugging the fridge and stuffing the bottom drawer with a towel.

He said: “For an extra level of caution, you put another towel or bath mat just outside the fridge in case it does leak at all.

“This way you can turn off the loud rattling mini fridge without making a mess.”

Noisy hotel fridges have notched up complaints across, TikTok, Twitter and Instagram, with Tiktoker (@terri..snyder) claiming hers sounded like it was “snoring.”

Another person added on Twitter: “I hate sleeping in hotels, the a/c and fridge are always so loud for no reason.”

Another added: “My fridge in my hotel room makes a really loud noise and I haven’t been getting any sleep because of it. I hate being a light sleeper.”

The noise isn’t the only feature putting people off hotel fridges – recently, a hotel guest was charged £41 simply for opening one on their room.

A notice left in the room said that the person would have to pay the fee if they wanted to add their own items to the fridge during their stay.

It read: “The refreshment centre is on a sensor. Use of the refreshment centre for personal storage will automatically incur a $50 (£41) charge.”

And fridges aren’t the only hotel feature people hate.
