As we ramp up to the end of The Masked Singer UK 2022 with another double celebrity contestant elimination, many reckon Michelle Williams is the famous face masquerading as Rockhopper.
Rockhopper is one of five costumed singers still left in the ITV competition, going up against Panda, Robobunny, Mushroom and Traffic Cone.
Following last week’s unmasking of Jaime Winstone as Firework and Michael Owen as Doughnuts, fans have become more convinced that singer Michelle – best known for being a member of Destiny’s Child – is Rockhopper, over other candidates such as Robyn, Ashley Roberts and popular guess Sheridan Smith.
The 42-year-old joined one of the biggest girl groups of all time after a chance meeting in a hotel lobby in Atlanta in 1999 with members Beyoncé Knowles and Kelly Rowland.
Here’s all the info you need to know about Michelle, and whether she could actually be behind Rockhopper on The Masked Singer.
What TV shows and movies has Michelle Williams starred in?
Following the success of their albums Destiny Fulfilled and a greatest hits compilation, Destiny’s Child disbanded in early 2006.
Shortly after, Michelle made her acting debut in the TV comedy Half & Half as record company executive Naomi, who is HIV positive, before singing with Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star Alfonso Ribeiro and Jai Rodriguez on the reality TV show Celebrity Duets.
After success in theatre – including appearing in Chicago in the West End – Michelle signed up for Strictly Come Dancing in 2010, where she was paired with Brendan Cole and eliminated after seven weeks.
Michelle featured in a reality show for the Oprah Winfrey Network in the US with her then-fiancé Chad Johnson, called Chad Loves Michelle, before guesting in period drama series American Soul as Diana Ross.
The star has also already participated in the US version of The Masked Singer in 2019, when she appeared as Butterfly.
Her most recent acting role was in Hallmark’s 2021 holiday TV movie Christmas in Harmony.
She also shares a name with multiple Oscar-nominee Michelle Williams, star of Brokeback Mountain, Manchester by the Sea and The Greatest Showman.
What are Michelle Williams’s best-known songs?
Most of Michelle’s best-known songs come from her time with Destiny’s Child.
Independent Woman Part I was her first official single with the group, appearing on the soundtrack for the 2001 movie version of Charlie’s Angels and topping the US singles chart for a whopping 11 consecutive weeks.
Bootylicious and Survivor were other number one tracks for the band, with later songs from their final album Destiny Fulfilled, Lose My Breath and Soldier, reaching number two in the US.
Michelle has also released several solo albums over the years, including Heart to Yours, Do You Know, Unexpected and Journey to Freedom, which was nominated for a Grammy.
Although they did not garner huge sales on the main charts, she saw success on the Gospel Albums and Christian Albums charts.
Her most known solo songs include We Break the Dawn, The Greatest and Waiting On You and If We Had You.
She also teamed up with Beyoncé and Kelly for her single Say Yes, which charted internationally.
Is Michelle Williams Rockhopper on The Masked Singer?
Although nothing is for certain until the mask is removed, there are plenty of clues which could lead to Michelle.
As well as having already appeared on the US version of the show, Destiny’s Child famously had a single titled Jumpin’ Jumpin’, with Rockhoppers known for their ability to jump.
Episode five of the hit show appeared to hint at Michelle, when a series of tarot cards revealed famous Williams, including William Shatner, William Shakespeare and Prince William, pointing towards her surname.
In another of her clues, the Rockhopper thanked ‘those with halos for all she has accomplished’, potentially acknowledging former bandmate Beyoncé and her track Halo.
‘There are some real similarities in the voices,’ Ria said as she played the short videos.
But that’s not all.
Emblazoned on the back of Rockhopper’s jacket are the Roman numerals for the number 47: XLVII.
Why is this relevant? Well, Beyoncé played the half-time show of the 47th Super Bowl in 2013, alongside Destiny’s Child – known as the XLVII Super Bowl.
The star also comes from a place called Rockford in Illinois, so Rockhopper might be a none-too-subtle nod to her hometown!
The Masked Singer airs tonight at 7pm.
