When and where can I see the partial lunar eclipse?
A total lunar eclipse occurs when our majestic moon falls entirely within the Earth’s shadow, transforming it to blood red, orange, brown or causing it to vanish altogether. Partial lunar eclipses, like the one on Nov. 21, are when the Moon only somewhat passes into the Earth’s shadow. However, the effects on our lives are still very much the same.
The full moon in November goes by many names: the beaver moon, the frost moon, the freezing moon, the digging moon, the scratching moon or the whitefish moon. Many of these names originated from Native American tribes and were passed along to us from the Farmer’s Almanac. Normally the November full moon isn’t also a lunar eclipse—which is what makes this one so special, but also three times more intense.
The lunar eclipse will be visible over most of Asia, Australia and the Americas, and also somewhat visible in parts of Western Europe and West Africa. When I said it’s going to be long, it will be 3 hours and 28 minutes long — which is quite a feat considering most eclipses take place in under two hours. On the East Coast, prepare to see it just after 2 a.m. and reach its height around 4 a.m.; if you’re on the West Coast, peer outside after 11 p.m. (on the 20th) but expect it to present its greatest visibility around 1 a.m. (on the 21st).
