In Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #4, the war against the Foot Clan finally takes a turn as the resistance claims their first victory.
WARNING: The following contains major spoilers for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin #4, available now from IDW.
Of all the futures that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles have known over the years, that of The Last Ronin (by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, Tom Waltz, Ben Bishop, Esau Escorza, and Isaac Escorza) is easily the bleakest. New York City is now a desolate and polluted landscape, held firm in the iron grip of the Foot Clan. Thankfully, there are still some who resist the reign of Oroku Hiroto and the army he commands, and the addition of Michelangelo to the fight has been an invaluable one. Not only that, but another classic TMNT hero has just turned the tide of battle for what might be the last time by taking control of the city back from the Foot.
The time has finally come for the resistance to launch a full scale attack on the Foot Clan. Unlike Michelangelo’s failed assassination attempt of Oroku Hiroto, this time the target is Baxter Stockman and the network he controls from his stronghold on Roosevelt Island. It’s a daring undertaking, one that looks a lot like a suicide mission from the outset, but April has come up with a plan that will give them the upper hand over the Foot, assuming they can pull it off.
After battling their way into Stockman’s fortress, April is able to connect the severed head of Fugitoid to the network, leaving the rest to fate. The cybernetically enhanced Baxter Stockman catches up to her quickly, but there is nothing he can do to stop Fugitoid from coming online and ending both of their lives with a massive jolt of electricity. It’s the ultimate sacrifice for one of the Turtles’ oldest allies, a brutal end for one of their most iconic villains, and the first real victory for the resistance.
The android body that Professor Zayton Honeycutt was reduced to may have been destroyed, but there is still enough of him left to take control of the network. Fugitoid’s sacrifice brings a swarm of intelligent nanobytes imbued with Honeycutt’s consciousness, and within seconds the professor has taken control of Stockman’s network, and by extension the entire city. Not only does this cut off the Foot Clan’s control over surveillance equipment, it shuts down their cybernetic police force as well.
It only takes a few minutes for the citizens to realize what is happening, and only a few more for them to realize that this isn’t a fluke. As the lights go out, the people rise up against their oppressors, bringing the fight against the Foot Clan out of the shadows and into the streets.
This is the best outcome that the heroes could have asked for going into their mission. While Michelangelo is left shaken by the loss of another friend, the fact that the tide has turned in the war against the Foot Clan is well worth Honeycutt’s sacrifice.
Now that they have a fighting chance and the support of the general public, it’s easy to imagine the resistance toppling Hiroto’s regime before long. With any luck, the Last Ronin will still be standing when the dust has finally settled.
