The footage of The Beatles’ final recording sessions has been locked up for decades, until now. Today the Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson has released part one of Get Back, an eight hour TV documentary on Disney Plus that gives a true insight into the band’s writing process. Although Beatles fans are excited to get into the series, the reviews have not been massively positive.
Alexis Petridis from The Guardian described the eight-hour epic as “aimless”.
He says: “The moments of inspiration and interest are marooned amid acres of desultory chit-chat and repetition.
“There is a point, about five hours in, when the prospect of hearing another ramshackle version of Don’t Let Me Down becomes an active threat to the viewer’s sanity.”
Neil McCormick of The Telegraph gave a fairly positive review of the documentary, but added that it is “too long and winding”.

Neil said: “There may be some grimacing and yawning and worse along the way, and not just from the Fab Four themselves. Because painstaking is the operative word.”
Not every piece of criticism towards the three-part documentary is negative, however.
The Times‘ Kevin Maher gave the event four stars out of five while calling it a “deeply moving flashback epic”.
Ed Cumming of The Independent gave the Disney venture five stars out of five.
Owen said: “As it turns out, the finished film transcends both the hype and the fan anxiety. Get Back does indeed present the Beatles as a close-knit group of showman-gods who never stopped clowning around or loving each other.”
The two remaining Beatles themselves, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, have already gone on record saying how happy they are with the new show.
Paul said: “I am really happy that Peter has delved into our archives to make a series that shows the truth about The Beatles recording together.”
Ringo added: “There were hours and hours of us just laughing and playing music, not at all like the Let It Be film that came out [in 1970]. There was a lot of joy and I think Peter will show that.”
Part one of The Beatles Get Back is on Disney Plus now. Part two comes out tomorrow, while part three hits the service on Saturday.
