Tesco is making some big changes to its delivery prices in 2023.

Unfortunately, the supermarket is increasing the minimum basket spend and charge for ordering groceries online.

At the minute, the supermarket charges a £4 ‘basket charge’ if the value of your home delivery shop is under the £40 minimum spend.

But as of May 2, the charge is going up another pound to £5, and the minimum basket value for home delivery is increasing to £50.

In the context of the cost of living crisis, it’s unlikely to be popular.

However, the minimum basket value of £25 for click and collect shoppers will remain the same, so you can still save some pennies (and time!) if you’re willing to pop in and grab the bags.

The Tesco website reads: ‘From 2 May, the minimum basket charge will increase to £5. The minimum basket charge is added to all orders that don’t meet the minimum basket value.

‘At the same time, the minimum basket value for Home Delivery will change to £50. The minimum order value for Click+Collect will remain at £25 for all stores.

‘A £4 minimum basket charge will be added to home delivery orders at checkout where the basket value is under our £40 minimum.’

You won’t get the £4 basket charge if:

  • Your final basket is over the £40 minimum.
  • You make changes to your order after you’ve checked out and the final basket is over the threshold.
  • If any substitutions are made to your order which result in your basket dropping below the threshold.

Tesco states: ‘If you’ve incurred the minimum basket charge, you‘ll accumulate Clubcard points and these will be added to your account when you check out.’

This will also apply if you have a Delivery Saver plan, according to Tesco.

‘The minimum order value for Click+Collect orders is £25 in all stores. If your order is under this, you’ll be charged a £4 minimum basket charge,’ Tesco states.

Tesco Woosh

If you want to do a smaller shop for less money, then Tesco’s Woosh may be a better, cheaper option.

The rapid delivery service gets groceries to your door in an hour and you don’t need to spend a minimum amount to place an order.

However if your basket is under £15 you’ll be charged an extra £2 on top of the pick, pack and delivery charge, and the delivery charge does not count towards the minimum spend.

Whoosh also isn’t part of the Delivery Saver plan, so that’s something to consider.
