Tennis great’s brutal Federer admission

Australian tennis great Todd Woodbridge says it’s “highly unlikely” Roger Federer will win another Grand Slam title in his career.

Federer, who recently turned 40, underwent a third operation on his troublesome right knee in August, a procedure that he said would leave him out of the game for “many months”.

After missing out on the Australian Open this year, the Swiss maestro returned to Grand Slam action at the French Open and Wimbledon.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner proved he still has plenty left, reaching the round of 16 at Roland-Garros before withdrawing from the tournament, while at Wimbledon he went one better by making it through to the quarter-finals.

But after most recently missing the US Open, and with fears Federer might miss the Australian Open for a second straight year, Woodbridge says it’s tough to see a scenario where the tennis icon can land Grand Slam title number 21.

“Highly unlikely,” Woodbridge said on 2GB’s Wide World of Sports’ radio.

“If he were to win one, I think the only one that he would be able to get through is Wimbledon.

“He’s had another knee surgery … he’s not going to be out on the court for a while.

“I don’t think we’re going to see him in Australia (in 2022). He’s not going to win at the French Open, and he’s 40 years of age.

“I think Roger’s going to come out and play some nice matches, but winning seven matches to win a slam, I don’t think we’re going to see that.”

Woodbridge conceded that the same situation also applies to Serena Williams, but said the American star is “more likely” to win another Grand Slam than Federer.

“You can probably throw Serena Williams in that very similar situation,” he said.

“These last 12 months have been a really interesting period and a change over for tennis.

“But Serena is more likely [to win another Grand Slam] I feel than Roger.”
